Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.
Stay at home if you have either:
- a high temperature - you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
- a new, continuous cough. This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
- loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. This means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.
Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital
Use the 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do
Read the NHS advice about staying home including how long to isolate for.
Use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service if:
- You feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home
- Your condition gets worse
- Your symptoms do not get better after 7 days
Only call 111 if you cannot get help online.
For further information on: High risk groups, How to avoid catching and spreading coronavirus and Pregnancy advice. Go to: nhs.uk/coronavirus.
For information on social distancing, go to: gov.uk/guidance-on-social-distancing
Ring our main telephone line on 01777 713330 to book an appointment. Say immediately if your call is an emergency.Your condition may be assessed by a triage Doctor, who will then either provide you with advice or give you an appointment to see a doctor, nurse or other health professional.
If your condition is non urgent, you can expect to see a GP within two to seven working days, though you may have to wait longer if you want to see a particular G.P.
The nurses based in our practice treat patients for a wide range of common conditions.
Telephone Consultations
We can also provide you with a telephone consultation, if this is more appropriate, e.g. for advice, test results or other query. Please request a telephone appointment when speaking to the receptionist.
If you need to speak to a doctor urgently, we will either put you through as soon as we can or take your telephone number and the doctor will ring you back when possible.
Chaperone
If the doctor or nurse considers it appropriate, you will be offered the presence of a chaperone during your consultation, or you may request one.
Alternatively, you may prefer to bring a friend or relative with you to your appointment.
OUT OF HOURS
If you or your family need urgent medical care when the surgery is closed, please phone the usual daytime surgery number (01777 713330) and your call will be re-directed to the out-of hours service. Alternatively call the Out of Hours Service on 111. Your needs will be assessed and you will either be given advice or arrangements will be made for you to be seen by a healthcare professional.
This service provides Emergency Cover Only and is for urgent problems that cannot wait till the following morning when normal surgery resumes.

Aurora services set to relocate to enable building work to commence
02 October 2020
Aurora Wellbeing in Worksop has this week relocated a number of vital services in preparation for the start of building works and the transformation of the Old Library Building on Memorial Avenue.
Aurora Wellbeing, a local charity that supports people in Bassetlaw affected by cancer and long term health conditions was in 2019 awarded £1.56M from the National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF), boosted to £2M with support from key stakeholders, to transform the Old Library Building where the Aurora charity is based.
Throughout the duration of the building works, Aurora will continue to deliver services to local people to ensure people in Bassetlaw diagnosed with cancer receive vital help and support, and until services can return to the centre in 2021.
The Aurora Charity Shop and Tea Rooms will relocate to the former Dukeries Tea Rooms building on Bridge Street in Worksop in October 2020, for a period of approximately six months and will open daily from Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm.
Aurora beauty therapy services will continue to deliver services from Sparkles Beauty, Kilton Road, Worksop and customers are asked to call 0750 3612084 during this period to book appointments.
Aurora Wellbeing Practitioners will continue to provide health needs assessments and support across the Bassetlaw area (working remotely) to help support people and their families with a cancer diagnosis, and to offer emotional support, counselling and workshops.
Aurora exercise classes, including Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi, will continue either online via Zoom or at locations across the locality.

Right now, it is their priority to stay in touch with clients, volunteers and many friends of the charity. They are continuing to offer support and a friendly listening ear to anyone who may be struggling with feelings of anxiety, loneliness or depression and encourage you to chat about your concerns. Contact Aurora via telephone, Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm, on 01909 470985.

There are good relationships between staff, the people who live at Redbank House, family, friends and the wider community. We take part in local activities, such as bingo.
Some people have jobs delivering magazines, which provide opportunities to get to know local people. Other activities the residents currently enjoy is music, dance and art classes and we can access other courses depending on what people are interested in.
We encourage everyone to be involved in how our home is run by expressing their view at house meetings, making suggestions and completing questionnaires. Everyone has the opportunity to be involved in recruiting new staff, showing potential new employees around our home and asking them questions and people are encouraged to take on responsibilities such as answering the phone, asking visitors to sign in and sorting the post.
Location
Our home is in a rural area in a quiet village and has a large garden. We can access facilities in nearby towns using public transport or our own vehicle.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and arthritis
We’ll be continually reviewing this content as the COVID-19 situation evolves across the UK and guidance changes over time. Therefore, it’s important to check this page regularly for updates.
What should you do?
Current advice for people with arthritis recommends that you should wash your hands regularly, practice socially distance according to the 2-metre guidelines and stay at home as much as possible.
It's important to try to keep active, eat healthy and take care of your wellbeing. We’ve published these articles which include advice to help support you.
- Looking after your wellbeing
- Managing your pain at home
- Staying at home and arthritis
- Staying active with arthritis
There are likely to be differences at a more local level when required. If there’s different advice where you are, your local council website should have details. Find your local council at gov.uk
Self-isolating and shielding
If you are being treated for an autoimmune condition it may increase your risk of getting coronavirus.
At the height of the pandemic you may have been advised to shield or self-isolate to protect yourself.
While virus rates remain low the UK Government has eased restrictions for vulnerable people. This means from 1 August in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England you will no longer have to shield and will have greater freedom, while the risk is lower. Shielding will be paused in Wales from the 16 August.
Although this does not reduce your risk from the virus, it does mean you are able to get out more and can mix with small groups of people, while infection rates are low
We're continuing to monitor Government announcements from each nation and will provide updates as more information becomes available. For more information read Arthritis and COVID-19 - what are the risks?

Arthritis and coronavirus – looking after your emotional wellbeing
We know that many of you will be impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19). Whether your are returning to work, staying at home, or you are supporting loved ones.
As we are continuing to adjust to our different routines, you might be feeling anxious and it may feel harder to take care of your wellbeing.
There’s lots of people looking out for you
Public Health England has published this guide with advice on how to look after your mental health and wellbeing during the coronavirus crisis.
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) have also compiled these resources to support you with managing your physical and mental health and wellbeing.
If you’re having a difficult time, you can reach out to expert organisations like Mind and Anxiety UK for emotional support. If you're feeling anxious about the easing of lockdown, read Anxiety UK's article on coronaphobia and life after lockdown.
Young Minds UK provide mental health advice for children and young people, and if you care for others you can contact Carers UK for support.
If you’re struggling to cope, the Samaritans is a registered charity aimed at providing emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, or at risk of suicide throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Also, you can call our free helpline on 0800 5200 520 or email: helpline@versusarthritis.org (Mon-Fri 9am – 8pm) andconnect with others on our online community.
Here’s our selection of the best advice from our information and leading wellbeing experts:
If you're feeling worried
If you need further support, the mental health charity, Mind has lots of information which could help. This includes specific support on coronavirus and wellbeing, from checklists to make sure you have everything you need if you are staying at home, finding ways to spend your time and advice on limiting social media and news for a while.
For conversations with children about the coronavirus, look at the Mental Health Foundation’s advice on how to talk to children.
Getting rest
We know that getting a good night sleep can be tricky when you live with pain and lack of sleep can lower the body’s ability to cope with pain.
If you’re finding it harder to get quality sleep at the moment, try some simple meditation techniques or an online yoga class might help. Read more about the benefits of meditation, yoga and tai-chi and our sleep top tips.
Keep healthy
Try to get into a new daily routine that prioritises looking after yourself.
Try to eat a balanced and healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. If you can’t get what you usually buy right now, tinned food can be a great alternative. Check out the store cupboard thread on our online community.
Find out what support is on your doorstep, as many local shops are offering food deliveries, as well as the supermarkets. Take a look at the COVID-19 Mutual Aid website for a list of local groups that might be able to help.
If you have a garden, make time every day to get outside and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. If you can’t get outdoors, open the windows and take time to sit in a sunny spot, especially if you're working at home.
Exercise – every little helps
Doing just a small amount of regular exercise can make a big difference to both your physical and mental health and wellbeing. It can boost your mood and help you relax. Try to make exercise a regular part of your day.
If you like to get outside, this might be a frustrating time. But there are things we can do at home to move more.
For inspiration on ways to get moving at home go to the We are Undefeatable website. They have ideas ranging from chair exercises, yoga to dancing in your kitchen.

COVID19 update, 13th August 2020 - When the lockdown happened, members of the Retford and District MS Family Support Group were quick to respond to the need to keep in touch with each other and continue where possible with physical activities where they could.
They soon discovered Zoom, which has been a lifeline to many members facing loneliness during the lockdown. Members without internet have been receiving regular phone calls and condensed versions of the group’s monthly newsletter to keep everyone involved, with the added section of MS family news where members have contributed sharing how the lockdown and other restrictions has affected their home life, how they are filling their time and, in many cases, limited members’ access to the family PC that has been taken over by home schooling.
The group Zoom calendar is fully booked for five days of the week and well supported by members taking part in social and movement therapy events consisting of seated Yoga, Tai Chi, dance and neuro Pilates as well as two quizzes a week devised by members, coffee and chat mornings and a men-only session.
The downside of the lockdown has been the cancellation of fundraising events the group always look forward to holding each year, and the planned Team Retford MS Pentathlon, when local people with MS and supporters raise money for Bassetlaw NHS neuro service, also had to be cancelled. Members were also looking forward to taking part, just for fun, in an indoor sky dive in September and it is very doubtful that will now be able to go ahead.
Anyone who is affected by Multiple Sclerosis is welcome to become part of the group and further details can be obtained from retford@mssociety.org.uk
Newcomers always welcome. We arrange a wide range of weekly & monthly events for members & include MS drop in clinic, monthly newsletter, self help info, signposting for professional help, fundraising for local MS community, art class, neuro physio based Pilates exercise, swim/flot sessions, mels out & a monthly coffee cake & chat morning.

If you require a manual wheelchair because you have a medical condition (such as a broken leg or ankle) which is likely to improve within three months, your Doctor, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Community Nurse will be able to request one for short-term use from the Integrated Community Equipment Service (ICES).
Long-term loan (Over six months)
If your Doctor or Health Care Professional has assessed that you require a wheelchair to use regularly and for the long term (over six months), they will make a referral to the wheelchair service for the most appropriate manual wheelchair from the available range. If you and your carer are not able to use or manage a manual wheelchair due to a physical or medical condition, you may be eligible for an attendant controlled powered wheelchair.
A voucher scheme is available. Following an assessment by service you may choose to receive a voucher towards the cost of a different or more expensive manual wheelchair of your choice
If a Doctor or Health Care Professional has referred you for a powered wheelchair, you will be asked to participate in a three-part assessment. This assesses whether your medical condition or physical disability causes your mobility to be severely restricted and that assesses whether your home is suitable to use and store a powered wheelchair. Your ability to safely drive (manoeuvre) the wheelchair will be assessed.
Buying a Wheelchair
You may wish to buy your own wheelchair, but it is strongly recommended that you seek advice from a health professional and try a range of wheelchairs before you purchase. Remember that all wheelchairs need to be regularly serviced.
Hospital Wheelchairs
The wheelchairs at Bassetlaw Hospital and Retford Hospital are for the use of patients and their carers during their visit/stay in hospital. They are for use within the hospital only.

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

At Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, we help girls reach their full potential...
With more than 9000 members, Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gives girls and young women space where they can grow, develop, build brilliant friendships, and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. We may have been going for a long time but we continue to give girls and young women, of all backgrounds and faiths, an opportunity to make their voices heard so that they can realise their full potential to become dynamic members of the 21st century.
Whatever your daughters interests, whatever age - Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gives the chance to discover their full potential, give back to the local community, gain practical life skills and have fun with friendships that are built to last.
We are an inclusive organisation and will help any member to get the most out of their time with us. Guiding welcomes girls and adults with disabilities and its varied programme is flexible to allow most girls to participate. Every member of guiding makes a promise to do their best. If a girl or leader is willing to commit to the Promise – then they can become a member of Girlguiding UK.
Do come and join us if you have learning or physical special needs that limit your activities but not your hopes and achievements. Everyone is included and everyone does their best.
Everyone has their strengths and we aim to work with the abilities a person has and offer help if they need it. In guiding we encourage the girls to learn social skills, work together, be tolerant and respect diversity whilst carrying out the most important part of our philosophy – having fun! A girl with disabilities should be able to take as full a part as possible in her unit's activities. At the same time, the other girls’ requirements are taken into account so that the experience is a positive one for everyone.
We will do our best to find you a place in a local unit if possible but it would be helpful if parents discuss their daughter’s needs with the unit leader before she joins so that advice can be taken from the guiding Adviser for Members with Disabilities.
Our shop and the ground floor at Nottinghamshire Guide Head Quarters are wheelchair accessible, as are our camp and holiday premises.
The shop is open: Weds and Thurs 3pm-7pm and Sat 10am-2pm.
