Aurora services set to relocate to enable building work to commence
02 October 2020
Aurora Wellbeing in Worksop has this week relocated a number of vital services in preparation for the start of building works and the transformation of the Old Library Building on Memorial Avenue.
Aurora Wellbeing, a local charity that supports people in Bassetlaw affected by cancer and long term health conditions was in 2019 awarded £1.56M from the National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF), boosted to £2M with support from key stakeholders, to transform the Old Library Building where the Aurora charity is based.
Throughout the duration of the building works, Aurora will continue to deliver services to local people to ensure people in Bassetlaw diagnosed with cancer receive vital help and support, and until services can return to the centre in 2021.
The Aurora Charity Shop and Tea Rooms will relocate to the former Dukeries Tea Rooms building on Bridge Street in Worksop in October 2020, for a period of approximately six months and will open daily from Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm.

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.
Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one, and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issue. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
Psychotherapy can be short-term(a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months or years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned jointly by the patient and therapist.
Access to Service
Our service is available across the county using digital platforms and telephone. Face to face sessions are available in Mansfield and Worksop. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available to suit your needs.
We can work with clients aged 18 and over through self-referral, a GP referral or through other agencies that support you.
Assessment
In a telephone conversation, our coordinator will ask you about your personal circumstances and what is causing you concern. This will help determine if our service is right for you.
At the assessment, you will be asked about your current situation, past experiences, a brief medical history and how you hope to benefit from counselling. If we cannot provide the correct help for you at this time we will do our best to find alternative support.
After the assessment, you will be placed on our waiting list. If you would like any further information about our Counselling Service please contact our main office on 0800 470 0203 and speak to our team for more information.
Digital Support
New Digital Services
Peer support services have been a part of Nottinghamshire Mind for many years now and provide a platform for individuals to share experiences and build support networks, this has proven to improve emotional health, wellbeing and a sense of belonging for both those who deliver and receive support.
Through the current pandemic we’ve encouraged members old and new to take part in our ever growing platform or digital services, empowering some to try something new for the very first time.
At present we offer app based peer support sessions daily Monday to Thursday.
You’ll have the opportunity to feel part of a community, share experiences, feelings and thoughts and build friendships, all of which will promote and support you to maintain positive wellbeing.
Our use of the GroupMe app allows our recovery coaches to promote ideas and approaches that may be helpful to you, such as relaxation tips, exercises, talking therapies and near crisis planning. We also use these session to provide creativity and fun with our Quiz – keeping the brain active , Photography sessions – sharing snaps to brighten your day ….. and much more.
Our Information sessions can also take place digitally on a 1-1 basis should you require a little more support, sessions take place over zoom and allow you the chance to see and communicate with one of our recovery coaches.
Sessions are 30 minute and you don’t need to have your camera switched on but you’ll be able to see our recovery coach, we feel this helps build a better relationship for the client.
If you are interested in any of the services above please contact one of our recovery coaches.

COVID 19 UPDATE
We have coordinated a phased approach to reintroducing visitors to our care homes and retirement living in England, Scotland and Wales. Where a home or scheme has an active outbreak or is in a location experiencing a regional lockdown it will remain closed to visitors until Public Health advise that they are able to open again.
If there is a regional lockdown in place, you will not be able to visit loved ones. Please follow local information and if you are unsure please contact the home for more information. In these cases, the end of an outbreak will be defined when Public Health declares the local lockdown is over. This is to account for national differences and changing guidance.

Coronavirus: what you need to know
Coronavirus is a virus that affects the lungs and airways. There are some important steps you should take to help protect yourself and reduce the risk of coronavirus spreading.
Coronavirus causes an illness called COVID-19. Most people who catch it will only have mild symptoms, but some people may need to be treated in hospital.
The symptoms of coronavirus are a cough, a high temperature and shortness of breath. But those symptoms are very common, so if you have them it doesn’t necessarily mean you have coronavirus.
The Government has said everyone must follow social distancing measures.
Go to GOV.UK to help you understand what you should and shouldn’t do.
There are some people who are more at risk from coronavirus, such as people who are over 70, those with an underlying health condition or those who are pregnant. It’s particularly important they follow the Government’s advice and avoid close contact with other people.
The Government is also advising people to stay home for 7 days if they live alone, or 14 days if they live with other people, if they or someone they live with have either or both of the following:
- A high temperature.
- A new, continuous cough.
You don’t need to tell the NHS if you’re staying at home. If you still have symptoms after 7 days, or think you need medical care, call NHS 111 for help. Don’t go to your doctor’s surgery or hospital – call 111.
Because COVID-19 is a new illness, we don’t know everything about it yet. But by taking some simple, effective measures, we can all reduce our risk of catching it or transmitting it to other people.
The best thing to do to reduce the risk of getting or spreading coronavirus is to stay at home, and wash your hands regularly.
You should wash your hands:
- more often than you would normally
- for at least 20 seconds, or for two rounds of the song ‘Happy Birthday’
- before you eat or handle food
- after you come home from being outside
- after sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose
- before touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Watch this video from the NHS on how to wash your hands effectively.
If you’re feeling worried about coronavirus
It’s completely understandable to be concerned about coronavirus and the impact it might have on you and those you care about, particularly if you’re living with health conditions.
Try to stay calm and keep following good hygiene practises like washing your hands regularly.

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

If callers would like to be put in touch with a Silver Line Friend, they can enjoy a regular weekly friendship telephone call. Silver Line Friends are volunteers who have contacted The Silver Line because they enjoy talking to older people.
Calls are free for both parties, as costs are covered by The Silver Line through donations.
We match the older person to like-minded volunteers, based on their interests and preferences. It is not a counselling service and Silver Line Friends will not meet, or know the telephone numbers of the people they speak to.
Silver Letters
Telephone friendship schemes are not suitable for everyone. We created the Silver Letters scheme for people who are hearing impaired, and would like a Silver Line Friend, as well as those who just prefer the written word.
Silver Letters are a regular exchange of correspondence between an older person and a Silver Line Friend. All postage is free for both parties, and sent via our mail centre, so costs are covered by The Silver Line.
We match older people to like-minded volunteers. It is not a counselling service and Silver Line Friends will not meet or know the address of the people they write to.
Silver Circles
Silver Circles are facilitated group telephone calls where people with shared interests can discuss topics that interest them with a wider group. This is enjoyed by people who would like to speak with more than one person at a time.
Calls are free for people taking part, as costs are covered by The Silver Line.
Silver Connects
The Silver Connects team provides older people with more intensive support, advice, and help with connecting to local services. Since launching in November 2015, the team has worked on issues ranging from housing and health issues, to finding lunch clubs and even financial concerns.
Find out about more about volunteering opportunities with The Silver Line here.

At Care Sourcer, we are transforming the care sector by bringing choice, control and transparency to the market.

When you are going through a difficult time, it can be very easy to keep your worries to yourself and believe that you are the only one experiencing such painful feelings. While we all have our own ways of coping, information and support can make a huge difference.
Counselling Directory was set up by a team who know how difficult it can be to find the support and information you need. Being a team who between us have experienced various mental health issues, we know how it feels to be overwhelmed, isolated and somewhat lost.
Through our own experiences, we have learnt how important having relevant information is and how the right support can help transform lives.
Our journey inspired us to share what we have learnt along the way with others. Our team is passionate about counselling and we want to promote the huge benefits talking therapy can have. We know how important it is to find the right counsellor for you and we are dedicated to making that process as simple as possible.

Supporting someone during Covid-19
Checking in on your family, friends and colleagues is always important. But as the coronavirus pandemic continues, this is more important than ever.
Lots of us have felt worried about the coronavirus pandemic, and everyone will feel differently about the changes to lockdown restrictions.
If someone’s feeling anxious or worried, you don’t need to be an expert on mental health to support them. Think about using our three top tips:
1) Check in
If someone doesn’t feel ready to meet face-to-face, picking up the phone, having a video call, starting a group chat or messaging someone on social media lets them know you are there to talk and ready to listen.
2) Listen and reflect
Whether you have a mental health problem or not, this will be a challenging time for our mental health and wellbeing. If someone opens up to you, remember that you don't need to fix things or offer advice. Often just listening, and showing you take them seriously, can help someone to manage.
3) Ask questions
Ask how people are managing, and ask again if you're worried they aren't sharing the full picture. Asking again, with interest, can help someone to open up and explore what they're feeling.
If you are in need of mental health advice and information in relation to Covid-19, our partners Mind and Rethink Mental Illness have a number of resources at the bottom of our web page.
General enquiries
The Time to Change team is currently working from home in line with Government advice on Covid-19. This means we are unable to respond to calls, voicemails or post. To get in touch, please email our team.
Email: info@time-to-change.org.uk
Time to Change is a growing social movement working to change the way we all think and act about mental health problems. We've already reached millions of people and begun to improve attitudes and behaviour.
Despite the progress we’ve made, we know that many people still don’t consider mental health relevant to them. They don’t believe mental health problems are likely to affect them or people they know.
But the reality is that mental health can affect anyone. Statistically, 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That’s why our work is so important. No one should have to fear being treated differently because of a mental health problem.
If you're looking for individual advice, information or support for you or someone else, unfortunately Time to Change can't provide that but there are lots of people who can - visit our Mental health help and support services page for a list of numbers to call.

Coronavirus: how we are supporting participants during the pandemic
Since March 2020 the Coronavirus pandemic has given rise to an unprecedented situation, affecting the lives of us all and resulting in the closure of key services and support agencies. During this time the health, safety and wellbeing of Opportunity and Change participants remains our priority, and the partnership has been working tirelessly to ensure that participants remain supported.
We are continuing to accept new referrals; offering a remote induction to the project and telephone/online support until we are in a position to fully assess participant eligibility and resume face-to-face contact.
The project is responding to the crisis in the following ways:
All face-to-face appointments have been replaced with telephone and online support (e.g. Zoom, WhatsApp, email, etc.)
Frequency of contact has increased; Navigators are checking-in more often to help reduce feelings of isolation
Up to date resources are being shared, including: mental health tools, online training courses and financial support
Participants accessing counselling services have been able to continue to do so via phone or using a virtual meeting platform
Participants who are missing their weekly Skills Plus for Change sessions are being offered alternative support online
Navigator support has adapted to meet the practical needs of participants; ensuring they have access to food parcels, toiletries, utilities and delivering prescriptions where necessary
What is Opportunity and Change?

Active Age is a community based befriending service. It is for anyone who is over 55 and will enable them to access and attend local groups and activities in their area to help them to explore old or new interests and form new friendships within their own community.
Loneliness can have a significant impact on a person’s wellbeing and is often associated with later life. As you get older it’s common to find that your social circle starts to shrink.
Loneliness can have a devastating impact on our lives and can be a significant cause of depression, impact on physical health and also dementia. There are however ways we can make sure we stay connected with the people in our communities around us as we get older.
Loneliness and isolation does not just affect people who live alone
This FREE service is for older people who are socially isolated or lonely but not necessarily living alone.
It covers the areas of Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover.

The Armed Forces Day flag has been proudly flying in Worksop and Retford market squares all week.
We would like to thank all members of the Armed Forces past and present for their service to our country and in our communities.
This year we celebrate our #MercianWarriors, past and present, and are grateful for all they have achieved this year through their continued selfless commitment and dedication to serve the nation. Working alongside NATO partners and other allies, they continue to deliver security at home and abroad. Adaptable and ready, most recently regular and reserve soldiers of The Mercian Regiment have been deployed across the country, assisting with the delivery of self-administered COVID-19 tests to those in need.

A wide range of services are available from Bassetlaw District Council and our partner organisations that can help with your resettlement.

In turn, the armed forces promote ties with the local community and offer support wherever they can.
Other partners and local groups, have also signed up to the principles in the Community Covenant, including Nottinghamshire Police, local NHS services, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue, Job Centre Plus, and BCVS on behalf of local voluntary and community services.
You can read the Bassetlaw Community Covenant for additional information.

Scams
Scams affect the lives of many people across Nottinghamshire. They come in many forms and it is impossible to know about all of them.
Anyone can fall for a scam, but some people are more vulnerable due to their circumstances and are therefore more likely to be targeted by criminals. People who lose money to scams often also experience loneliness, shame and social isolation. There is no need to feel ashamed, there are agencies that can provide help and advice.
People who reply to scams aren't stupid. We know that the criminals are very clever and know what to say to get money out of anyone. Once someone has replied once, we know that their contact details are passed on to other criminal gangs and they will then receive other scams.
Some scams are specifically targeted at businesses, for example publishing scams. Some information about business scams can be found on the Business Companion website.
Our Trading Standards team works with many organisations including Citizens Advice, Nottinghamshire Police and the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness of the issues around scams and provide advice and support.
If you are a carer or have an older relative, please be on the lookout for any signs that they have been scammed. Each situation is different but typical signs could include:
- if you have elderly relatives, friends or neighbours, you can help protect them from scams by becoming a Friend Against Scams. This is a national scheme which is free to join and includes an online awareness session or local workshop event
- receiving lots of unwanted calls
- unusual transactions on bank statements
- becoming unwilling to go out (just in case they miss the next phone call telling them what they have won)
- no money to buy food / pay bills
- lots of mail about prize draws, lotteries, or unwanted catalogues
- unwilling to throw any old post away.
If you receive a phone call or letter that causes you concern, talk about it with a friend. Share your concerns. They may have received it too. It's always worth talking to your bank and letting them know your concerns.
Types of scams
Scams can fall in to some broad categories and here are some examples:
- Doorstep: People call at your door telling you that a roof tile is loose, your driveway needs repairing, they can cut trees down cheaply, try to sell you a mattress or some fish etc. Find out more about doorstep callers.
- Telephone: Phone calls telling you that you need to pay an urgent bill and requesting your bank details, companies offering services to reduce you unwanted phone calls.
- Online: 'Copycat' websites selling services that are either free or cheaper via the official Government route.
- Post: Letters informing you that you have won a prize, psychics telling you they can predict harm is coming your way and for a fee they can protect you, catalogues promises you a prize if you place another order quickly.
Scam Marshals
If you receive lots of scam mail, you can help take a stand against scams by becoming a Scam Marshal. Scam Marshals share their own experiences by sending in their scam mail to a national team who use it to fight scams. You can register yourself or on behalf of someone else.

Doorstep callers
We advise you never to buy goods or services from a trader on your doorstep.
Don’t answer your door if you are not expecting a caller. If the person needs to contact you urgently, they will put a note through your door or have your contact details and be able to contact you via other means.
If you are expecting a caller:
- use a window or a door viewer to see who the caller is
- check the identity of the caller. Do not let the caller into your house until you have verified their ID
- do not rely on the number they give you as it may not be genuine. Verify their identity by ringing their employer using the telephone number listed in the phone book or look for the number on a bill
- if you have any concerns or suspicions then ask the caller to leave, close and lock your door. If the caller will not leave and tries to gain entry then call the Police on 999.

PTSDUK - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder UK
PTSD UK exisits to share information and raise awareness of PTSD to help everyone who is experiencing it or touched by it.
Evidence suggests that around 70% of people who suffer with PTSD in the UK do not receive any professional help at all, and many of those who are aware they have it are not getting the help and support they need.
Our charity aims to raise awareness of PTSD in three main areas – it’s causes, symptoms and the treatments available. These 3 areas are of vital importance to those suffering with the condition.
Causes: Many people have pre-conceived ideas of PTSD, and what can cause it. There is a widespread misunderstanding that PTSD only affect veterans, or those in the armed forces (likely due to it’s previous name of shell-shock) but it can infact affect anyone, of any age. It’s vital that people are aware if they (or a friend or family member) have suffered a trauma, they should be mindful of trauma symptoms, and the possibility of PTSD.
Symptoms: There are two areas in which knowing the symptoms of PTSD are useful. The first is that people may recognize the symptoms in themselves (or a friend or family member) and reach out for help – starting their recovery process. The other is those who are suffering with PTSD, can understand that what they’re thinking or feeling, or how their body is reacting, is ‘normal’ for someone with PTSD – this can be of huge comfort knowing that once the PTSD is resolved, those symptoms will be too. Some symptoms of PTSD feel totally unconnected to the original trauma or the condition itself, so it’s really important people can recognize just how PTSD can affect them.
Treatments: PTSD is a misunderstood condition in many ways – and no more so than the treatments available. As PTSD arises from a specific trauma (or a number of traumas or sustained traumas) it means that the issues and symptoms can be resolved, and effectively treated. There are a variety of therapies and activities than can help ease PTSD symptoms, some immediate, and some longer term, but the current NICE guidelines recommend EMDR and CBT as the main options for the treatment of PTSD.
In addition to those suffering (and those around them), it’s vital that healthcare professionals are aware of all of these elements to look out for in their patients to avoid misdiagnosis, incorrect treatments and lack of the best resources for their patients.
Stay Safe & Well this Winter
Useful information and advice on how to stay well and safe throughout winter.
Stay safe and well this winter….
This year has been like no other. Normally, many of us would take time to visit our older relatives, friends and neighbours as winter approaches to ensure they are safe and well. However, under the current COVID-19 restrictions we now have to do things a little differently. Even though we may not always be able to pop round for a cuppa at the moment, it is really important that we still check in with vulnerable people by phone, text or online chat.
Visitt: winter warmth advice available online.
There is also a section about staying steady which includes top tips on preventing a fall: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/falls
‘Get Up and Go’ guides, are packed with lots of useful information including how to reduce the risk of trips and falls in the home and what to do if someone has a fall. Contact Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 80 80 if you would like to get a free copy of the guide. If you are unable to check the risks in your own home, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service may be able to organise a safe and well visit. This includes a discussion about falls and other potential risks. Find out how to make a referral or phone 0115 8388100.
You may also be concerned about your own health. Unfortunately, getting older can affect our balance, muscle strength and bones – it’s the same for everyone, particularly if you are over 75. But we can all protect our independence for longer by taking some simple steps. The fear of falling may mean that you would rather stay inactive in case you hurt yourself.
However, the evidence shows that long periods of sitting down can do more damage. By doing regular exercise and stepping up your daily activity, you can help to improve your balance and muscle strength. The recommended amount is 30 minutes five times a week. Gardening, housework, cycling and walking all count towards this total. Experts also advise two muscle strengthening sessions a week for the over 65s.
If you’re struggling to get out to exercise during the winter months, you can sign up to free virtual strength and balance classes for the over 55s by visiting Your Health Your Way and clicking ‘refer today’ or phone 0115 772 2515.
There are also other virtual groups and classes continuing across the county so there are opportunities to stay active and connected to others during these challenging times. If you are feeling lonely and would like support getting in touch with local groups and networks, the Connect service can help. If you want information about this service, other ways to stay independent or what types of support are available, then please visit Nottinghamshire County Council’s website or phone 0300 500 80 80.
So, although we can’t do all the things we normally love, it’s important to try to stay positive, stay active, get support when you need it and look out for each other.
Stay safe and well this winter.
