Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.
Stay at home if you have either:
- a high temperature - you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
- a new, continuous cough. This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
- loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. This means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

Ring our main telephone line on 01777 713330 to book an appointment. Say immediately if your call is an emergency.Your condition may be assessed by a triage Doctor, who will then either provide you with advice or give you an appointment to see a doctor, nurse or other health professional.
If your condition is non urgent, you can expect to see a GP within two to seven working days, though you may have to wait longer if you want to see a particular G.P.
The nurses based in our practice treat patients for a wide range of common conditions.
Telephone Consultations
We can also provide you with a telephone consultation, if this is more appropriate, e.g. for advice, test results or other query. Please request a telephone appointment when speaking to the receptionist.
If you need to speak to a doctor urgently, we will either put you through as soon as we can or take your telephone number and the doctor will ring you back when possible.
Chaperone
If the doctor or nurse considers it appropriate, you will be offered the presence of a chaperone during your consultation, or you may request one.
Alternatively, you may prefer to bring a friend or relative with you to your appointment.
OUT OF HOURS
If you or your family need urgent medical care when the surgery is closed, please phone the usual daytime surgery number (01777 713330) and your call will be re-directed to the out-of hours service. Alternatively call the Out of Hours Service on 111. Your needs will be assessed and you will either be given advice or arrangements will be made for you to be seen by a healthcare professional.
This service provides Emergency Cover Only and is for urgent problems that cannot wait till the following morning when normal surgery resumes.

Bassetlaw Hospital Discharge Scheme operates in Bassetlaw district for anyone aged 50 or over on hospital discharge and helps them to quickly regain their independence and confidence.
The patients will be visited on the ward before discharge and matched with a volunteer. Services offered include:
- Preparing the home for return
- Assisting with visits to outpatients' appointments, shopping, collecting prescriptions and social activities
- Signposting to other service benefit checks, home safety, community transport and other community services.
All volunteers are trained and DBS checked, and will provide support for six to eight weeks.

Aurora services set to relocate to enable building work to commence
02 October 2020
Aurora Wellbeing in Worksop has this week relocated a number of vital services in preparation for the start of building works and the transformation of the Old Library Building on Memorial Avenue.
Aurora Wellbeing, a local charity that supports people in Bassetlaw affected by cancer and long term health conditions was in 2019 awarded £1.56M from the National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF), boosted to £2M with support from key stakeholders, to transform the Old Library Building where the Aurora charity is based.
Throughout the duration of the building works, Aurora will continue to deliver services to local people to ensure people in Bassetlaw diagnosed with cancer receive vital help and support, and until services can return to the centre in 2021.
The Aurora Charity Shop and Tea Rooms will relocate to the former Dukeries Tea Rooms building on Bridge Street in Worksop in October 2020, for a period of approximately six months and will open daily from Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm.
Aurora beauty therapy services will continue to deliver services from Sparkles Beauty, Kilton Road, Worksop and customers are asked to call 0750 3612084 during this period to book appointments.
Aurora Wellbeing Practitioners will continue to provide health needs assessments and support across the Bassetlaw area (working remotely) to help support people and their families with a cancer diagnosis, and to offer emotional support, counselling and workshops.
Aurora exercise classes, including Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi, will continue either online via Zoom or at locations across the locality.

Pre-loved charity shop
Aurora’s pre-loved charity shop is now open. They have a fantastic selection of good quality clothes, children’s toys and a second hand book collection selling books at very reasonable prices for you to browse. Their volunteers have been busy making hand-crafted quality facemasks, which have an internal breathable filter material and these are available to buy or order from the shop.
Valerie’s tearooms
They are operating a takeaway service from their much loved Valerie’s Tearooms and welcome old and new friends to visit and take away a hot drink, slice of cake or light refreshments. They also have a competitive meal deal on offer.
Aurora services
Aurora continues to offer telephone-based support and services to people and their families affected by cancer or long term health conditions. Every day their advisors speak to people who are living with cancer, newly diagnosed or struggling to move forward with life after treatment, and for many, they face additional difficulties due to the coronavirus outbreak. Right now, it is their priority to stay in touch with clients, volunteers and many friends of the charity. They are continuing to offer support and a friendly listening ear to anyone who may be struggling with feelings of anxiety, loneliness or depression and encourage you to chat about your concerns. Aurora is continuing to offer a range of support services whilst the centre remains closed, and they continue to share information and advice and arrange counselling and bereavement support. Harmless was established at the beginning of October 2007 to respond to the needs of people who do or are at risk of self-harm and suicide. People Who Self Harm
Self harm is the term used to describe when someone deliberately hurts themselves as a way of dealing with their emotions. They may do this in a number of ways, including:
- cutting or scratching themselves
- burning themselves with a flame or something hot
- causing bruising to the body by hitting themselves
- throwing their body against something that will hurt
- taking overdoses of tablets or medication
- inserting objects into the body
- hair pulling (also known as trichotilliomania)

- You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.
- You may not have to wait as long as your repeat prescriptions could be prepared before you arrive.

COVID 19 update, 13th July, waiting for confirmation that walks can resume.
A volunteer walking group offering free Health/Leisure Walks, starting from Harworth & Bircotes Sports & Social Club every Wednesday at 10.00 a.m. There are two levels of walks available; a short walk of approx. 1 hour at a gentle over fairly level terrain and a longer walk of approximately 90 minutes at a reasonable pace. Walks are usually on farm tracks and public paths around the Bircotes & Harworth area. Occasionally we go off site to visit places of interest. All walks are led by trained Walk Leaders who carry first aid kits and safety whistles. After the walks we adjourn to the Sports & Social Club for refreshments and a good natter. Assistance dogs are welcome on a short lead.

The team work with children and young people up to 18 years old who have an intellectual disability and suffer emotional distress. They work with parents/carers, schools, health professionals, social care and short breaks and offer individual tailored advice and strategies to support the young person.

What does post-lockdown mean?
The government has officially eased lockdown rules, meaning as things stand right now, you’re allowed to meet up with more friends and family from different households, visit pubs and restaurants and even have your hair cut!
You still have to follow some social distancing restrictions and rules are slightly different depending on where in the UK you live.

Is the easing of lockdown a good thing?
For some people, the end of lockdown might feel like a huge relief. You can go out again! You can see your mates and you can do all the things you’ve been missing so much over the past few months.
But this isn’t the way everyone feels, and many of us might not feel at all ready to go back to “normality.”
- Though you may want to see your friends, the thought of putting yourself or others at risk of getting ill can be scary.
- You might be dealing with loss.
- You might be struggling with your mental or physical health.
- You might not want things to change.
How do I cope with all this change and uncertainty?
Uncertainty can be uncomfortable. When the future is hard to predict it can make you feel like things are out of your control, which can be scary.
Anxiety and fear are reasonable and natural responses to big changes.
If you feel this way there’s nothing wrong with you and there’s no need to feel embarrassed.
- Try talking to someone you trust about the way you’re feeling.
- Sticking to a routine can help to give you a sense of control, even if it’s something small like reading before bed or going for a walk at the same time every day.
- Try writing a list of all the things you can control.
- Get creative! Try singing, dancing, playing music or painting to express how you’re feeling.
What if I don’t feel comfortable going out yet?
Know that you don’t need to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
- Take things at your own pace.
- Communicate with your friends and family about how the changes are making you feel.
- If it makes you feel safer, stick to meeting people in the park in smaller groups.
- If you want to wear a mask when you see people then that’s fine too.
What if I’m shielding?
For those who are shielding (often people with long-term health conditions), the easing of restrictions won’t apply in the same way.
If you or someone in your family is shielding then it can be really stressful to see life returning to normal. It can also give you massive FOMO!
If you’re shielding or you’re worried about someone who is, know that you’re not alone.
Make sure you’re chatting to friends and family as much as you can. You can also chat things through with one of our team.
It might help to switch off from social media sometimes to avoid drawing comparisons.
Things are going back to normal, but I’m dealing with loss
Some people will have lost loved ones during the pandemic. It can be difficult to see normality returning when you’re dealing with grief and loss.
You may not have been able to see a loved one before they passed away. Restrictions may have meant that you couldn’t go to their funeral. This can make things feel twice as hard.
Grieving is one of the hardest things we go through, and everyone reacts differently. It’s ok if you’re struggling and it’s nothing to feel guilty about. But the fact that restrictions are easing also means that you can now see the people in your life that can support you through this time. Staying in touch with your friends and family can make a huge difference.

But, I liked some bits of lockdown!
Did you actually find lockdown nice and peaceful? Some people enjoyed the chance to slow things down and reconnect with the things they love doing.
You might also feel anxious about returning to school, university or to normal working life. But you’re not the only person who’ll be feeling this way.
- Make a list of all the things you enjoyed about lockdown, so you know which habits you want to keep.
- Talk to your employer or your teachers about what you need to feel comfortable going back to a more normal routine.
- Take things slowly; no one is forcing you to rush back to a faster pace of life.
Stay connected
No matter how you’re feeling about a post-lockdown world, it’s important to remember that we’re all going through this together, and there’s no perfect way of coping.
The key thing is to stay connected to those around you and make sure you feel supported and heard.

Types of support
Victims of crime and anti-social behaviour benefit from enhanced help and support with a new-style service, designed around the needs of victims to help them cope and recover from their experience and empower them to become more resilient
- Tailored emotional and practical support, advocacy and restorative justice determined through a ‘needs assessment’, focusing on the level of harm caused by the crime and the vulnerability of the victim.
- A dedicated Caseworker providing one to one support to each victim, making it less stressful for them and reducing the number of times they are asked to tell their story
- Access to restorative justice services arranged by the Caseworker, which could include facilitating dialogue with a person with a conviction. Restorative justice brings those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.

The Community Advisor is a specialist with a wealth of knowledge and experience about services across Bassetlaw, helping individuals to access non-medical support services from voluntary organisations and community groups.
Anyone over the age of 16 who is registered with a Bassetlaw GP can access this service.
You can ask at your GP Reception when the Community Advisor will be visiting your local surgery or contact us directly here at BCVS.
The Community Advisor will discuss with the individual how one of the many voluntary or community services may help them improve their health and wellbeing alongside any existing medical treatment.
The Community Advisor can help you to:
- Identify groups which may offer additional support to help you understand and manage your medical condition
- Access community social groups by giving you a named contact and specific group information
- Access benefits, debt and welfare advice
- Address loneliness and isolation issues by encouraging participation with local activity group

Supporting someone during Covid-19
Checking in on your family, friends and colleagues is always important. But as the coronavirus pandemic continues, this is more important than ever.
Lots of us have felt worried about the coronavirus pandemic, and everyone will feel differently about the changes to lockdown restrictions.
If someone’s feeling anxious or worried, you don’t need to be an expert on mental health to support them. Think about using our three top tips:
1) Check in
If someone doesn’t feel ready to meet face-to-face, picking up the phone, having a video call, starting a group chat or messaging someone on social media lets them know you are there to talk and ready to listen.
2) Listen and reflect
Whether you have a mental health problem or not, this will be a challenging time for our mental health and wellbeing. If someone opens up to you, remember that you don't need to fix things or offer advice. Often just listening, and showing you take them seriously, can help someone to manage.
3) Ask questions
Ask how people are managing, and ask again if you're worried they aren't sharing the full picture. Asking again, with interest, can help someone to open up and explore what they're feeling.

We provide a 24 hour, seven day crisis resolution service that offers assessments to people with significant mental illness who would otherwise be admitted to hospital.
This includes short term home treatment in order to minimise the risk of a patient being admitted to hospital and providing support to achieve recovery from crisis at home.

During this difficult period, CISWO is continuing to provide our personal welfare service and are accepting referrals from individuals themselves, family members and other agencies. The majority of our services can be delivered remotely and we are working hard to provide support by telephone, email, and post.
Our free and confidential service includes;
Assistance with welfare benefit applications and industry related compensation schemes.
Advice on mining related issues including illness and disability.
Help to access mobility equipment including walking aids and wheelchairs.
Support to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
Advocacy to enable you to express your views and concerns, and defend and promote your rights, including access to information and services.
Emotional support including loss and bereavement, illness and caring responsibilities.
Financial assistance at times of exceptional hardship through CISWO grants or assistance through other agencies and charities. Access to holidays and convalescence.
Access to CISWO educational grants for former mineworkers and their dependents. Our support is available to former mineworkers, partners, widows and any dependent children or adult dependents with a disability. We have also extended our services to those in our client group most in need, particularly those who are self-isolating and have limited local support and can provide access to essential shopping and prescription collection in some areas.

PTSDUK - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder UK
PTSD UK exisits to share information and raise awareness of PTSD to help everyone who is experiencing it or touched by it.
Evidence suggests that around 70% of people who suffer with PTSD in the UK do not receive any professional help at all, and many of those who are aware they have it are not getting the help and support they need.
Our charity aims to raise awareness of PTSD in three main areas – it’s causes, symptoms and the treatments available. These 3 areas are of vital importance to those suffering with the condition.
Causes: Many people have pre-conceived ideas of PTSD, and what can cause it. There is a widespread misunderstanding that PTSD only affect veterans, or those in the armed forces (likely due to it’s previous name of shell-shock) but it can infact affect anyone, of any age. It’s vital that people are aware if they (or a friend or family member) have suffered a trauma, they should be mindful of trauma symptoms, and the possibility of PTSD.
Symptoms: There are two areas in which knowing the symptoms of PTSD are useful. The first is that people may recognize the symptoms in themselves (or a friend or family member) and reach out for help – starting their recovery process. The other is those who are suffering with PTSD, can understand that what they’re thinking or feeling, or how their body is reacting, is ‘normal’ for someone with PTSD – this can be of huge comfort knowing that once the PTSD is resolved, those symptoms will be too. Some symptoms of PTSD feel totally unconnected to the original trauma or the condition itself, so it’s really important people can recognize just how PTSD can affect them.
Treatments: PTSD is a misunderstood condition in many ways – and no more so than the treatments available. As PTSD arises from a specific trauma (or a number of traumas or sustained traumas) it means that the issues and symptoms can be resolved, and effectively treated. There are a variety of therapies and activities than can help ease PTSD symptoms, some immediate, and some longer term, but the current NICE guidelines recommend EMDR and CBT as the main options for the treatment of PTSD.
In addition to those suffering (and those around them), it’s vital that healthcare professionals are aware of all of these elements to look out for in their patients to avoid misdiagnosis, incorrect treatments and lack of the best resources for their patients.

Due to restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, you will be required to call ahead prior to visiting one of the Crisis Sanctuaries. This is to ensure that the Crisis Sanctuaries remain a safe and accessible place for visitors and staff.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Each Crisis Sanctuary will have 3 trained Crisis Intervention Workers who will provide recovery-focused crisis support in a trusted and consistent space for people who require out of hours mental health support. If required, onward community referrals will be made. If you would prefer not to attend the Crisis Sanctuaries, support can be provided via telephone or through video calling platforms.

There are Crisis Sanctuary located in the following areas of Nottinghamshire:
