Welcome to Sutton-Cum-Lound Church of England (VA) Primary School
A welcome from the Head Teacher…..
Thank you for taking the time to find out about our school!
We are a small school at the heart of its community just outside Retford in the village of Sutton-cum-Lound. We are very proud of the links we have with the village, church and the local area. We boast small class sizes and state of the art facilities. We have newly refurbished classrooms and a beautiful new outdoor learning area. In July 2017, we officially opened our new classroom for reception aged children which provides a superb learning space for our youngest children as they begin their learning journey with us.
We are very proud of the creative learning environments we have at Sutton, where children are immersed in their class topic - they may be in the jungle, in Dr. Seuss land, in a cave in the Stoneage, in a castle or even under camouflage netting in World War 2. The learning environments are a key feature in engaging the children and making their learning memorable and exciting.
The children are given opportunities to learn through first hand learning experiences, whether it be going on visits or having visitors coming into school.
We were delighted that the school was recognised by Ofsted in February 2015 awarding us a Good grade across all areas. In March 2016 we had our Church School Inspection and we were awarded Outstanding in all areas! Both reports can be read in the About Us section of the website.
Children can begin their journey at Sutton by joining Portland Place Pre-school. This is a separately managed setting which occupies one of the school classrooms. Portland Place Pre-school admit children from two years old. Pre-school is open daily from 8.45am to 3.00pm. For more information, please give them a call on 01777 705990 and choose the Portlnd Place Pre-school extension.
Children can then join Sutton in Foundation 2 (also referred to as reception). Making the decision about which school is the right school for your child can be a difficult one, but we hope that this website will help you make that decision and give you a flavour of Sutton-cum-Lound School and the learning opportunities we provide.
Our committed and caring staff work hard to make our school a friendly and secure place in which all children succeed and strive to achieve their full potential in a happy environment. We are enthusiastic about our work with the children and the experiences provided at Sutton-cum-Lound School. We believe it is vital that children learn skills for life; to be confident and independent, who have high expectations and aspire to make a positive contribution to society.
We offer extended provision with a breakfast club from 7.45am. Our Sutton Club is open daily from 3.15-5.30pm (more details in the After School and Breakfast Club section of the website). A range of extra-curricular activities after school enable children to learn a wide range of skills from sports to the arts. Take a look at the Preschool and Clubs section of the website for more information.
Being a small village school, we also enjoy the links we have with the family of schools. These links support and enhance the curriculum and wider experiences we provide for the children from sporting events to multi-cultural learning opportunities.
This website aims to give you a taster of the school, as well as providing regular updated information for both parents and pupils. It is not, however, intended to replace the best form of communication; that of personal contact between home and school. I would welcome the opportunity to meet you and your child, to show you around and discuss the opportunities Sutton-cum-Lound can provide. Please contact the school directly to arrange a convenient time to visit or with any queries you may have.
Please also have a look in the "Parents" section of the website where you will be able to see our newsletters and read more about what we have been doing!
We all look forward to working in partnership with you, for the benefit of your child, our school and the community.
Thank you for visiting!

Stay safe with us
At Busy Bees we are and have always been serious about the health, safety, and the welfare of everyone. This includes your child(ren), our staff, parents, visitors, and anyone who comes to work in our premises, including our contractors.
During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic more than 100 of our centres have remained open to children of key workers and vulnerable children, making us the largest provider of childcare to the NHS during these unusual times. Buzz and the Safety team have been busy keeping everyone safe at this time and as we prepare for the day we can reopen the rest of our nurseries and welcome you all back, we want to let you know what we are doing to keep our staff, children and families safe.
We are currently temporarily closed but re-opening from 1st September 2020.
Dear Parent,
Temporary Closure of Busy Bees Centre
Since the introduction of the government’s strategy of closing schools and nurseries, many of our centres across the country remained open supporting vulnerable children and the children of Key Workers in organisations who are in the front line in the fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19). In response to the government having introduced tighter controls on movement as a way of controlling the spread of infection and protecting communities we have reassessed our position.
The wellbeing of our staff teams, children who attend our centres and their parents remains our utmost priority and we will follow the expert advice on the best strategies to defeat the virus, which also means continuous reflection and development. As a response to the government strategy the numbers of children coming into our centres each day has now fallen significantly, and is far below initial forecast.
As it currently stands our centre has a limited demand for vulnerable children and children of Key Workers. Therefore, in effort to protect our communities we have made the decision to temporarily close our centre. This enables us to proactively protect our staff and remain in line with government guidelines regarding essential travel and the social distancing measures.
There are a small number of Key Worker families and vulnerable children who attend our centre and we have been working alongside them to find alternative care arrangements whilst trying to minimise disruption for all and aid a smooth transition. I can also confirm that our staff will continue to be employed by Busy Bees during this period of closure thanks to the government’s Job Retention Scheme, initiated due to the coronavirus situation.
If you have any questions at all, please speak with your Centre Director, however if you would prefer to use our central enquiries page you are welcome to do so. For all the latest news please visit our website and dedicated Coronavirus page www.busybeeschildcare.co.uk/coronavirus which features helpful FAQ content and links to Government and legislative guidance. Thank you for your continued support and loyalty during these challenging times, our thoughts go out to all of you who have been affected by this unprecedented situation.
Please, take care of yourselves, your loved ones and your communities and thank you for working with us while we take care of our Busy Bees community.
At Busy Bees Worksop we absolutely love to play, create and educate together.
We know how important your child’s safety, development and preschool education is to you. That’s why every child at Busy Bees at Worksop is assigned their very own key carer to ensure that we can provide you and your little ones with continuous assessment and the very best in quality childcare.
Quality Childcare in Worksop
Busy Bees at Worksop enjoys a lovely position within the Celtic Point shopping precinct in Nottinghamshire’s Worksop. Perfectly positioned for local residents and the Barratt Celtic Village residential development we are close to the A57 and M1 and just off Raymoth Lane.
There is ample parking on site for convenient drop-offs and pick-ups and plus many bus stops nearby for those using local bus routes and services. Parents love the convenient location of our nursery location – we enjoy an on-site Asda plus a range of other shops and amenities.
Our purpose-built, two-storey nursery welcomes children aged 12 weeks to 5 years across 4 separate rooms, designed to deliver outstanding childcare appropriate to their age and stage of development.
‘Heart of the Community’ Nursery
Local parents love Busy Bees at Worksop because of its lovely, ‘local’ community feel. Our long established manager and her team make children and parents feel instantly relaxed and settled, helping the transition from home to nursery. In addition to our managers additional qualifications we have two members of the team qualified to Level 5 in childcare, ensuring a strong leadership team with a strong safeguarding ethos.
Parents particularly appreciate the way we divide our rooms according to age. Many local nurseries in the area have under 2’s rooms but here at Busy Bees at Worksop we have a specialist baby room for children from 12 weeks up to the age of 1. Once our babies are on the move they move on to the next age-appropriate room full of play opportunities and learning resources to challenge them in the next stage in their physical and mental development.
All of our children enjoy a fabulous, well-resourced large garden for outdoor play – this is split into over and under 2’s to provide safe and secure play opportunities. We also enjoy trips out and about in the community visiting Clumber Park and Worksop Library for a spot of story-telling.
Foundations for lifelong Learning
Here at Busy Bees Worksop our aim is to maximise the potential of every child. We do this through a combination of child-led and creative play, introducing gentle routine and structure as children progress through the nursery. We strive to develop happy, independent and confident children with a wide range of educational and social skills.
At Busy Bees Worksop we enjoy messy play, sensory play, home corner and role play right through to the pre-school staples of phonics, literacy and elemental mathematics – we’ve got every age and stage of childcare covered. We offer extra-curricular music sessions every Friday afternoon during term time with Caterpillar Music.
Our Preschool children tend to go on to neighbouring schools St Johns CE Academy Primary School, Worksop, Norbridge Academy, Worksop and Gateford Park Primary School, Worksop. We have formed strong relationships with these schools and invite the staff into Treetops Worksop to help to get our preschool children ‘school-ready’.
Why you'll love our nursery...
- Strong management and childcare team
- Lovely, local community feel
- Fantastic on-site amenities
- Good transport links and road networks
- Ample parking
