CAMHS stands for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. It’s the part of the NHS which helps children and young people who have problems with their thoughts or feelings. We can help people until they are 18. If someone like a teacher or your doctor is worried about you, they can write to CAMHS to see if we can help you. This is called making a referral. The person who is going to write to us has to get your permission first. As long as we think you are able to decide, it's up to you whether or not we let your parents know.
If you are having trouble with your thoughts or feelings talk to your parents or carers, or an adult you trust. There is a useful website called Health for Teens that you may find useful: http://www.healthforteens.co.uk/
Most children who get help from CAMHS see one of our community teams. This normally means you will come to see us for weekly appointments at one of our bases, at a health centre or at your school. We have lots of people working for us who can help you in different ways. These include:
-
family therapists – who talk through problems with you and your family
-
CAMHS social workers – who support children and families through difficult times
-
family support workers – who can give advice to your parents or carers
-
mental health practitioners – who support young people and their families to bring about positive change
-
psychologists – experts in how people think and act
-
psychiatrists – doctors who work on thoughts and feelings
-
art psychotherapists – who can help you by using art and music
For more information visit our website: http://bit.ly/2sQl6GD
Information for parents and carers can be found at: http://bit.ly/2sgBCkS
As well as our community teams, we have some teams which work on other difficulties. These include:
- Problems with eating
- Problems with drugs or alcohol
- Psychosis – when someone hears or sees things which aren’t there
- Intellectual disability – when someone finds it difficult to communicate or understand things

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

The Mix
--
Free confidential support for young people under 25 via online, social media and mobile
What does post-lockdown mean?
The government has officially eased lockdown rules, meaning as things stand right now, you’re allowed to meet up with more friends and family from different households, visit pubs and restaurants and even have your hair cut!
You still have to follow some social distancing restrictions and rules are slightly different depending on where in the UK you live.
For a full summary, see this BBC article.
Is the easing of lockdown a good thing?
For some people, the end of lockdown might feel like a huge relief. You can go out again! You can see your mates and you can do all the things you’ve been missing so much over the past few months.
But this isn’t the way everyone feels, and many of us might not feel at all ready to go back to “normality.”
- Though you may want to see your friends, the thought of putting yourself or others at risk of getting ill can be scary.
- You might be dealing with loss.
- You might be struggling with your mental or physical health.
- You might not want things to change.
How do I cope with all this change and uncertainty?
Uncertainty can be uncomfortable. When the future is hard to predict it can make you feel like things are out of your control, which can be scary.
Anxiety and fear are reasonable and natural responses to big changes.
If you feel this way there’s nothing wrong with you and there’s no need to feel embarrassed.
- Try talking to someone you trust about the way you’re feeling.
- Sticking to a routine can help to give you a sense of control, even if it’s something small like reading before bed or going for a walk at the same time every day.
- Try writing a list of all the things you can control.
- Get creative! Try singing, dancing, playing music or painting to express how you’re feeling.
What if I don’t feel comfortable going out yet?
Know that you don’t need to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
- Take things at your own pace.
- Communicate with your friends and family about how the changes are making you feel.
- If it makes you feel safer, stick to meeting people in the park in smaller groups.
- If you want to wear a mask when you see people then that’s fine too.
What if I’m shielding?
For those who are shielding (often people with long-term health conditions), the easing of restrictions won’t apply in the same way.
If you or someone in your family is shielding then it can be really stressful to see life returning to normal. It can also give you massive FOMO!
If you’re shielding or you’re worried about someone who is, know that you’re not alone.
Make sure you’re chatting to friends and family as much as you can. You can also chat things through with one of our team.
It might help to switch off from social media sometimes to avoid drawing comparisons.
Things are going back to normal, but I’m dealing with loss
Some people will have lost loved ones during the pandemic. It can be difficult to see normality returning when you’re dealing with grief and loss.
You may not have been able to see a loved one before they passed away. Restrictions may have meant that you couldn’t go to their funeral. This can make things feel twice as hard.
Grieving is one of the hardest things we go through, and everyone reacts differently. It’s ok if you’re struggling and it’s nothing to feel guilty about. But the fact that restrictions are easing also means that you can now see the people in your life that can support you through this time. Staying in touch with your friends and family can make a huge difference.
You might find our article on coping with grief helpful. Take a look at Barnardo’s article on coping with loss.
You could also sign up for bereavement counselling. You can get free counselling with The Mix here.
But, I liked some bits of lockdown!
Did you actually find lockdown nice and peaceful? Some people enjoyed the chance to slow things down and reconnect with the things they love doing.
You might also feel anxious about returning to school, university or to normal working life. But you’re not the only person who’ll be feeling this way.
- Make a list of all the things you enjoyed about lockdown, so you know which habits you want to keep.
- Talk to your employer or your teachers about what you need to feel comfortable going back to a more normal routine.
- Take things slowly; no one is forcing you to rush back to a faster pace of life.
Stay connected
No matter how you’re feeling about a post-lockdown world, it’s important to remember that we’re all going through this together, and there’s no perfect way of coping.
The key thing is to stay connected to those around you and make sure you feel supported and heard.

Coronavirus: ensuring a safe home during the crisis.
We need to stand together through this crisis.
Through our helpline, we’re hearing from people who are worried about how they'll pay the rent, whether they could be made homeless, or if they'll be stuck in unsafe housing.
The government has paused evictions to protect renters but this is due to end in August. Many are losing their jobs and unable to pay their rent. With the housing element of Universal Credit far too low, people across the country are at risk of huge debts and even losing their home once the evictions ban lifts. More needs to be done.
This is a national emergency and it’s right that government is treating it like that. But we will keep pressing them to ensure people have safe and secure homes to get through it. To achieve this, we need to:
- Increase housing benefit to cover the cost of average rents, and lift the benefit cap so people can access this money
- Give judges real power to ensure no-one is evicted as a result of coronavirus
- Ensure anyone with nowhere safe to stay can access emergency accommodation where they can follow public health advice
Now more than ever people need a safe and secure place to call home.
Support our call for action to help those facing urgent housing issues at this time.

Health for Teens offers health and wellbeing advice and information to young people aged 11-19, promoting a healthy body and mind. The site provides local information on relevant services to signpost young people to within Nottinghamshire.
As a service we would like to inform you of how to contact us in regards to supporting the websites to ensure the information we include on the local pages is up to date and relevant for Nottinghamshire. For example, if you have an event you would like us to promote to children, young people, parents or carer, or if you have a campaign that is running locally we can publicise these on the Health for kids or Teens Website’s.
We would also like to request you to promote the relevant website to the appropriate age group through your service. We have a range of publicity material available electronically and a limited supply of hard copies.
To get in touch, request any material and add any information you feel is relevant and appropriate for the sites please email the content to; healthforkidsandteens@nottscc.gov.uk
For further information on the Health for Teens and Kids Websites, please contact; Jenny Quin-Smith from the Youth Service on; 01158041180; Jennifer.quin-smith@nottscc.gov.uk

Homelessness happens to ordinary people and it can be devastating to the lives of those who experience it. There are long-term consequences beyond housing: physical and mental health, financial stability, education, employment and self-esteem are all affected… At BYH, we work tirelessly to mitigate the impact of youth homelessness throughout Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The project provide support for young people aged 16-25 years old who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. We aim to prevent homelessness in the first instance, however when this has not been possible we offer the help they need to rebuild their lives and empower them to successfully move on from homelessness.

Elizabeth House provides high quality supported housing for homeless people in the South Nottinghamshire area. Residents are accommodated in self-contained en-suite flats and are supported by staff to address their problems, develop their skills and confidence, and, ultimately, move out to independent accommodation in the community.
Residents, ranging in age from 16 upwards, are accommodated in self-contained en-suite flats, one of which is accessible to wheelchair users. The idea of the service is to support vulnerable people away from homelessness and onto independent living in the community. Staff, who are on site 24 hours a day, provide extensive support to boost residents’ skills, their confidence and their ambitions before they are able to make the transition to move-on accommodation.
What we are doing
Elizabeth House is preventing homelessness and providing much needed opportunities to vulnerable people – people who would otherwise be homeless and at risk of entrenched social exclusion. The service provides so much more than just a bed for the night; it provides a solid and supported base from which homeless people can begin their recovery with dignity and security, and plan for the rest of their lives.
Elizabeth House is just one of several Framework accommodation centres that gives vulnerable people a second chance.

COVID Update: Emmanuel House is now open for appointment-only services
Our priority is to help people who are homeless, rough sleeping, or in crisis and at risk of homelessness.
Throughout the lockdown, we’ve continued to work with our beneficiaries by offering them advice and support. Following the implementation of social distancing, we are now working on a phased re-opening of Emmanuel House in line with government advice. We are offering services by appointment to people who are homeless, rough sleeping, or in crisis and at risk of homelessness.
If anyone is in need of support, they can call Emmanuel House to make an appointment with one of our support workers. We’re supporting people with issues around benefits, housing, domestic violence or abuse and any other concerns that they may have at this time. When people contact us we focus on the support they particularly need and work with them in the best way that suits them.
Our “drop in” service of pre-booked appointments is going really well and we’re having direct contact with those in need. We can link people with any one of the 100+ services and organisations we’re in touch with. We can signpost a person to the support that best suits their needs around mental health, substance misuse or offending histories. Emmanuel House offers continuity, which is often lacking in the lives of people that we work with. People know our reputation of being here when they need us. We’re helping those with complex needs and seeing an improvement in their circumstances and wellbeing.
We support the most vulnerable citizens in Nottingham without prejudice or judgment in order to tackle isolation, vulnerability and homelessness. We strive to provide diverse and accessible services that meet basic needs and empower individuals to make positive changes in their lives.
Emmanuel House services, and the Winter Shelter we co-ordinate, are an integral part of the plan to reduce homelessness in the city of Nottingham.
In 2018/19 Emmanuel House had a footfall of 20,290 entrances. Presently Emmanuel House welcomes about 60 people each weekday and 40 people on Saturdays and Sundays.
Emmanuel House serves over 70 hot meals a day and provides basic services such as hot drinks, showers, a laundry facility and access to clean, dry clothes.
Access to Emmanuel House’s services and access to the Nottingham Winter Shelter are FREE.
Any individual, no matter their economic status, resident status, sexual orientation, gender identity, race or country of origin are able to access the service
It costs £10,000 a week to run our service and we receive no statutory funding. We are reliant on the goodwill of individuals, businesses and groups to support us with fundraising to enable us to provide support and services to beneficiaries.

The Canaan Trust supplies accommodation as the tip of the iceberg of its homeless service. Staff provide individual and collective support 24-7 with staff permanently, physically, available on site, recognizing that the homeless have complex needs which have contributed to their homelessness and they subsequent social exclusion.
The trust currently runs two properties and aims to provide a homely environment for all residents, providing areas for social interaction and friendships to develop.
Jordan House
Is a large nine-bedroom property with an extensive shared kitchen, large lounge, new dinning room, several bathrooms and toilet facilities.
Cranmer Street
Is a shared house with three bedrooms, shared kitchen, lounge, and bathroom.
Both properties are situated close to the town centre’s amenities – doctors, dentists, shops, Post Office, Job Centre, Connexions office and library.
Education – Our college facility
At Jordon House the trust has built a state-of-the-art education facility. The majority of its clients have educational issues requiring assistance with literacy and numeracy.
Working in partnership with Derby College, which provides professional tutors, clients can undertake courses in literacy and numeracy in a familiar environment which is supportive and conducive to their embracing the opportunities provided. This enables them to take examinations in both subjects at a pace appropriate to individual needs and abilities.
The educational facility is called The Manna and is also used to provide learning opportunities in many of the skills for life the majority of us take for granted. Clients are helped with budgeting, personal hygiene, cooking, shopping, sexual health, emotional intelligence, first aid, writing CVs, job searching, letter writing, and official form completion.
Clients, as well as receiving one to one support, can take part in group sessions dealing with issues relating to interpersonal skills, and substance abuse.
Volunteers put classes on in the Manna introducing clients to such subjects as art, sculpture, IT and other extra curricular studies.
Other volunteers help clients enjoy sports such as archery while the project provides clients with the opportunity to use the gym and swimming facilities at West Park.

Framework Housing Association- Sherwood Street Centre
1 Sherwood Street Mansfield Nottinghamshire

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Our Sherwood Street Centre provides 15 units of supported housing for homeless people in Mansfield. The service, which accommodates some of the most vulnerable people in our society, is staffed 24 hours a day and is designed to help residents along a journey to independent living in the community. Each of them is supported to learn vital new skills, to get help and treatment for any problems they may have, and to explore future employment and training options.
What we are doing
Rough sleeping is dangerous and potentially life-threatening. If this accommodation did not exist then more people would be sleeping rough – in tents, in alleyways, in cars and in abandoned buildings. But The Sherwood Street Centre provides much more than merely a bed for the night; it provides a solid and supported base from which homeless people can begin their recovery with dignity and security, and plan for the rest of their lives.
