Coronavirus (Covid-19)
In light of Government announcements, the WEA suspended all face to face teaching as of Friday 20th March for the foreseeable future. Your health and those of your loved ones is paramount to us and as such until we have had assurances that it is safe to return to the classroom this suspension of face to face teaching will remain in place.
Whilst, we have suspended face to face teaching, we are our offering a range of courses online for free. Find out more here
From everyone at the WEA please stay safe and follow the Government guidelines. Please browse our FAQs, and see a new video message from our CEO Simon Parkinson below.
Will I get a refund for my course?
We know these are difficult times for everyone and have reviewed our current refund policy to make sure that our students have some options if they aren’t able to complete or attend courses during this period of the Coronavirus.
Whilst we are making refunds available for our students we would encourage you if you are able, to consider turning your refund into a suggested donation to the WEA or a credit note to use for one of our future courses. Find out more about how to donate here
Donations help further support our work in ensuring learning is delivered to the most vulnerable at this difficult time.
We understand that these are also difficult times financially and we fully understand if you would prefer a refund. Here’s how we will work out any refund due:
• If you have attended one or two sessions of a longer course, we will fully refund you for the whole course.
• If you have attended three or more sessions we will refund you for the remaining sessions.
How long will it take to process my refund?
We are experiencing unprecedented levels of demand for refunds so please bear with us as it might take us longer than usual to refund you.
How do I find out about online learning?
Learn more about our online courses, activities and other ways to stay connected at https://www.wea.org.uk/online
WEA update on the use of Zoom for online learning
To ensure the safety and privacy of our online learning is maintained, the WEA have taken a number of steps to increase security measures on Zoom.
This includes ensuring all our courses/activities have passwords and use the waiting room feature. In addition to this we will be providing unique links to the sessions with passwords only available to the tutor and students on each course, this will mean that people can only join a WEA Zoom activity/course if they have been provided with the password. We are also working closely with our tutors to ensure they are monitoring this closely and continuing to safeguard our students and provide a safe space for them to continue learning with the WEA. The WEA will not collect any personal data from our students via Zoom.
We will continue to review this on an ongoing basis to ensure we are using the most secure platforms for online learning. You can find more information on our e-safety policy by clicking here.
Learn more about our online courses, activities and other ways to stay connected at https://www.wea.org.uk/online
What will happen if I'm due to take exams with my course?
We have been informed by Government that all exams are cancelled. We understand you may have lots of questions about what this means for your qualification and your future. We are continuing to work with Government and as soon as we have more information we will be back in touch with you.
As the largest voluntary sector provider of adult education, we deliver over 9,500 part-time courses for over 70,000 students across England and Scotland. We bring education into the heart of communities, providing high-quality, student-centred and tutor-led education to adults, whatever your age or stage in life.
Not everyone has access to the opportunities provided by education. We believe they should. That’s why we at the WEA help adults learn, no matter where they are, no matter what their circumstances.
We’ve been helping adults to learn since 1903, and with 2,300 course locations around the country, it means there is a WEA within the reach of 80% of the people that need it most. We take our courses out into communities nationwide, reaching people that conventional adult education can’t because they are often the ones that need it most.
Our professional tutors take the time to build trust and empathy with each student we teach, so we understand how learning can improve their lives, not just what their learning needs are inside the classroom. See how WEA courses have changed the lives of people like Lisa, Margaret, a community in Rochdale and many more people by reading our inspiring stories.
Here are 10 reasons to sign up to a WEA course today:
- Discover a hidden talent
- Reignite a former passion
- Boost your confidence and self-esteem
- Improve your wellbeing
- Make new friends
- Meet people that share the same interests
- Connect with your local community
- Become more active
- Keep your mental faculties sharp
- Learn new skills

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

At Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, we help girls reach their full potential...
With more than 9000 members, Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gives girls and young women space where they can grow, develop, build brilliant friendships, and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. We may have been going for a long time but we continue to give girls and young women, of all backgrounds and faiths, an opportunity to make their voices heard so that they can realise their full potential to become dynamic members of the 21st century.
Whatever your daughters interests, whatever age - Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gives the chance to discover their full potential, give back to the local community, gain practical life skills and have fun with friendships that are built to last.
We are an inclusive organisation and will help any member to get the most out of their time with us. Guiding welcomes girls and adults with disabilities and its varied programme is flexible to allow most girls to participate. Every member of guiding makes a promise to do their best. If a girl or leader is willing to commit to the Promise – then they can become a member of Girlguiding UK.
Do come and join us if you have learning or physical special needs that limit your activities but not your hopes and achievements. Everyone is included and everyone does their best.
Everyone has their strengths and we aim to work with the abilities a person has and offer help if they need it. In guiding we encourage the girls to learn social skills, work together, be tolerant and respect diversity whilst carrying out the most important part of our philosophy – having fun! A girl with disabilities should be able to take as full a part as possible in her unit's activities. At the same time, the other girls’ requirements are taken into account so that the experience is a positive one for everyone.
We will do our best to find you a place in a local unit if possible but it would be helpful if parents discuss their daughter’s needs with the unit leader before she joins so that advice can be taken from the guiding Adviser for Members with Disabilities.
Our shop and the ground floor at Nottinghamshire Guide Head Quarters are wheelchair accessible, as are our camp and holiday premises.
The shop is open: Weds and Thurs 3pm-7pm and Sat 10am-2pm.
