Our Day Therapy Centre is open Monday - Friday between 10am - 3pm. The safe, supportive and relaxing environment allows you to take time for yourself, to relax, gain support from others who are facing the same challenges as you or seek advice from our nursing staff.
Initially we offer you 12 attendances and our aim is to support you to take the lead in formulating an action plan to address any issues; planning your therapy and treatment and support such as symptom management, improving mobility and psychological issues. Once you have completed your sessions, our active discharge policy will support you in taking control in managing your condition.
In addition we offer:
- A home cooked lunch
- Complementary therapies
- Transport to and from the centre
- Outside space and a summer house
Bassetlaw Hospice prides itself on giving the best possible care and support for you and your carers. Specifically we focus on effective management of troublesome symptoms, which may be affecting your quality of life and ability to enjoy day-to-day activities. Other referrals to the Hospice may be for emotional support, convalescence following cancer treatments and care towards the end of life. We like to encourage early introduction to the hospice services through our Day Therapy Centre or informal visits to help reduce your fears and anxieties later on. All services provided within our Hospice are holistic for you the patient, your family, your medical, physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs.
The Nurse in Charge is available to discuss symptom management problems and can liase on your behalf with other service providers such as your GP or District Nurse. The nursing team also provide a bathing service if you are having difficulty accessing bathing facilities at home. Pre-visits are possible to meet the staff and view the facilities. Patients are invited to attend weekly to access the many services available. Day Hospice activities are designed to promote personal independence and increase self-esteem, often providing individuals with the opportunity to discover new skills.
All our rooms are comfortably decorated and our gardens with their superb fish pond and water feature provide the opportunity to walk outside and enjoy the wildlife - squirrels, ducks and many species of birds.
Visiting times
We operate open visiting hours, however it would be appreciated if there are no more than four visitors per room at any one time. Please consult the nursing staff before bringing children under the age of five into the Hospice.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.
Stay at home if you have either:
- a high temperature - you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

If your condition is non urgent, you can expect to see a GP within two to seven working days, though you may have to wait longer if you want to see a particular G.P.
The nurses based in our practice treat patients for a wide range of common conditions.
Telephone Consultations
We can also provide you with a telephone consultation, if this is more appropriate, e.g. for advice, test results or other query. Please request a telephone appointment when speaking to the receptionist.
If you need to speak to a doctor urgently, we will either put you through as soon as we can or take your telephone number and the doctor will ring you back when possible.
Chaperone
If the doctor or nurse considers it appropriate, you will be offered the presence of a chaperone during your consultation, or you may request one.
Alternatively, you may prefer to bring a friend or relative with you to your appointment.
OUT OF HOURS
If you or your family need urgent medical care when the surgery is closed, please phone the usual daytime surgery number (01777 713330) and your call will be re-directed to the out-of hours service. Alternatively call the Out of Hours Service on 111. Your needs will be assessed and you will either be given advice or arrangements will be made for you to be seen by a healthcare professional.
This service provides Emergency Cover Only and is for urgent problems that cannot wait till the following morning when normal surgery resumes.

Tuxford Manor is a purpose-built care home in the town of Tuxford, Nottinghamshire. Our home has a superb reputation locally and we are proud to be part of the local community.
Facilities at Tuxford Manor include various lounges, a hair salon and our ever-popular café. Our reception café was recently refurbished, creating a relaxing area for residents to sit with their family and friends over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
Outside, our home benefits from extensive gardens leading on to a large field to the rear of the home. An area of the field has been allocated for raised vegetable beds to enable green-fingered residents to enjoy growing their own fruit and vegetables.
We support our residents to continue with the daily activities and routines they would have done in their own home. Our residents particularly enjoy baking and preparing vegetables. Our care team also accompany residents to the local shop to buy their morning paper if they wish to do so. Entertainers visit our home regularly and we often welcome students from the Tuxford Academy as part of our active volunteer programme.

Bassetlaw Hospital Discharge Scheme operates in Bassetlaw district for anyone aged 50 or over on hospital discharge and helps them to quickly regain their independence and confidence.
The patients will be visited on the ward before discharge and matched with a volunteer. Services offered include:
- Preparing the home for return
- Assisting with visits to outpatients' appointments, shopping, collecting prescriptions and social activities
- Signposting to other service benefit checks, home safety, community transport and other community services.
All volunteers are trained and DBS checked, and will provide support for six to eight weeks.

Aurora services set to relocate to enable building work to commence
02 October 2020
Aurora Wellbeing in Worksop has this week relocated a number of vital services in preparation for the start of building works and the transformation of the Old Library Building on Memorial Avenue.
Aurora Wellbeing, a local charity that supports people in Bassetlaw affected by cancer and long term health conditions was in 2019 awarded £1.56M from the National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF), boosted to £2M with support from key stakeholders, to transform the Old Library Building where the Aurora charity is based.
Throughout the duration of the building works, Aurora will continue to deliver services to local people to ensure people in Bassetlaw diagnosed with cancer receive vital help and support, and until services can return to the centre in 2021.
The Aurora Charity Shop and Tea Rooms will relocate to the former Dukeries Tea Rooms building on Bridge Street in Worksop in October 2020, for a period of approximately six months and will open daily from Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm.
Aurora beauty therapy services will continue to deliver services from Sparkles Beauty, Kilton Road, Worksop and customers are asked to call 0750 3612084 during this period to book appointments.
Aurora Wellbeing Practitioners will continue to provide health needs assessments and support across the Bassetlaw area (working remotely) to help support people and their families with a cancer diagnosis, and to offer emotional support, counselling and workshops.
Aurora exercise classes, including Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi, will continue either online via Zoom or at locations across the locality.

Pre-loved charity shop
Aurora’s pre-loved charity shop is now open. They have a fantastic selection of good quality clothes, children’s toys and a second hand book collection selling books at very reasonable prices for you to browse. Their volunteers have been busy making hand-crafted quality facemasks, which have an internal breathable filter material and these are available to buy or order from the shop.
Valerie’s tearooms
They are operating a takeaway service from their much loved Valerie’s Tearooms and welcome old and new friends to visit and take away a hot drink, slice of cake or light refreshments. They also have a competitive meal deal on offer.
Aurora services
Aurora continues to offer telephone-based support and services to people and their families affected by cancer or long term health conditions. Every day their advisors speak to people who are living with cancer, newly diagnosed or struggling to move forward with life after treatment, and for many, they face additional difficulties due to the coronavirus outbreak. Right now, it is their priority to stay in touch with clients, volunteers and many friends of the charity. They are continuing to offer support and a friendly listening ear to anyone who may be struggling with feelings of anxiety, loneliness or depression and encourage you to chat about your concerns. Aurora is continuing to offer a range of support services whilst the centre remains closed, and they continue to share information and advice and arrange counselling and bereavement support. Coronavirus support for people affected by dementia
If you need help living with or supporting somebody with dementia during the coronavirus pandemic, we're here for you. You may feel anxious, scared or lonely. But you are not alone – help is available.
Catching coronavirus
Risks for people with dementia at home
A person living with dementia who has memory problems or confusion may struggle with the guidance and rules around coronavirus. These include frequent handwashing, and social distancing when outside to reduce the risk of catching the virus.
This may mean that, without help to stay safe, someone with dementia may be a bit more likely to become infected with the virus.
If someone has paid carers coming in and out to support them, this may also make the person more likely to catch coronavirus.
The carers should not stop coming, but should use measures like an apron, mask and gloves.
Risks for people with dementia living in residential care
For a person with dementia in a care home, evidence suggests that they are at higher risk of getting coronavirus.
This is partly because frailer older people have weaker immune systems that are less able to fight off infections. It’s also because people in care homes live very closely together.
The person may easily catch coronavirus from another resident, from a care worker or from a communal surface with virus on it.
Talk to the care home about any concerns you have and how you can support the person from a distance.
Severe COVID-19 illness
If a person with dementia does catch coronavirus, they are at higher risk of getting worse COVID-19 illness.
The risk of severe symptoms rises steeply with age, and 9 in 10 deaths have been in people over 60. Most people with dementia and many older carers will fall into a higher risk group on age alone.
Long-term health conditions also significantly raise the risk of severe illness. Some of the more common of these – heart or blood vessel disease and diabetes – are more often seen in people with dementia.
There is some evidence that dementia itself may add a further risk on top of age and these other health conditions, but this is not certain.
It is not clear why, but men and people from black and minority ethnic communities, with or without dementia, are also at increased risk. This link is not explained by age or long-term health conditions.
How does the government define vulnerable?
The issue of who the government recognises as vulnerable from coronavirus is complicated but important. It can affect the support available.
People identified as ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ are those with health conditions that put them at very high risk of severe symptoms if they catch the virus. This will be because they already have a serious lung condition or their immune system is already very weak. These people should have had a letter from their GP and have been staying at home at all times (‘shielding’).
From 1 August in England and Northern Ireland, and from 16 August in Wales, people who’ve been shielding have the choice to stop. Unless their doctor says otherwise, they can follow the same guidance as everyone else, but very carefully and only if they are confident to do so.
This ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ group doesn’t include people with dementia unless they have any of these conditions, including a kidney transplant, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or certain cancers. (See the government’s full list on GOV.UK)
What does this mean for people with dementia?
So for most people with dementia their risk of severe COVID-19 illness is not as high as for the ‘shielded’ group. As explained above, however, people with dementia and many older carers are at higher risk than the general population. Therefore, people with dementia are ‘vulnerable’ on health grounds, but not ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’. This is why they can leave the house to exercise, meet a few people (including others who aren’t in their household) outdoors or shop (if they have to), but must follow the social distancing rules very carefully.
Separately, anyone with dementia and many carers are already seen as ‘vulnerable adults’ by the NHS and social care. This term is commonly used when talking about general support needs or a person’s ability to protect themselves from harm. It is not directly linked to coronavirus.
These terms ‘vulnerable’ and ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ can make a difference, for example when it comes to food shopping.
People in the ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ group in England and Northern Ireland qualified for a food parcel arranged by the government until 1 August (and will do in Wales until 16 August).
After those dates, they and people with dementia should still be treated as vulnerable customers by supermarkets or other suppliers and so be eligible for arrangements such as dedicated shopping times.

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.
Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one, and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issue. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
Psychotherapy can be short-term(a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months or years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned jointly by the patient and therapist.
Access to Service
Our service is available across the county using digital platforms and telephone. Face to face sessions are available in Mansfield and Worksop. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available to suit your needs.
We can work with clients aged 18 and over through self-referral, a GP referral or through other agencies that support you.
Assessment
In a telephone conversation, our coordinator will ask you about your personal circumstances and what is causing you concern. This will help determine if our service is right for you.
At the assessment, you will be asked about your current situation, past experiences, a brief medical history and how you hope to benefit from counselling. If we cannot provide the correct help for you at this time we will do our best to find alternative support.

New Digital Services
Peer support services have been a part of Nottinghamshire Mind for many years now and provide a platform for individuals to share experiences and build support networks, this has proven to improve emotional health, wellbeing and a sense of belonging for both those who deliver and receive support.
Through the current pandemic we’ve encouraged members old and new to take part in our ever growing platform or digital services, empowering some to try something new for the very first time.
At present we offer app based peer support sessions daily Monday to Thursday.
You’ll have the opportunity to feel part of a community, share experiences, feelings and thoughts and build friendships, all of which will promote and support you to maintain positive wellbeing.
Our use of the GroupMe app allows our recovery coaches to promote ideas and approaches that may be helpful to you, such as relaxation tips, exercises, talking therapies and near crisis planning. We also use these session to provide creativity and fun with our Quiz – keeping the brain active , Photography sessions – sharing snaps to brighten your day ….. and much more.
Our Information sessions can also take place digitally on a 1-1 basis should you require a little more support, sessions take place over zoom and allow you the chance to see and communicate with one of our recovery coaches.
Sessions are 30 minute and you don’t need to have your camera switched on but you’ll be able to see our recovery coach, we feel this helps build a better relationship for the client.

COVID 19 UPDATE
We have coordinated a phased approach to reintroducing visitors to our care homes and retirement living in England, Scotland and Wales. Where a home or scheme has an active outbreak or is in a location experiencing a regional lockdown it will remain closed to visitors until Public Health advise that they are able to open again.
If there is a regional lockdown in place, you will not be able to visit loved ones. Please follow local information and if you are unsure please contact the home for more information. In these cases, the end of an outbreak will be defined when Public Health declares the local lockdown is over. This is to account for national differences and changing guidance.

We are aware that many residents will want to help by supporting their neighbours or others who may be in self-isolation, and that there will be residents in need of help with some tasks who will not be sure who they can turn to. We are working together with Rotherham Council and the Rotherham Together Partnership to help support and coordinate this activity.
ROTHERHAM HEROES VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME
The Rotherham Heroes Volunteer Programme is a borough-wide volunteer programme, co-ordinated by the Rotherham Community Hub to help vulnerable people across Rotherham during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
The Rotherham Community Hub includes Rotherham Council, Voluntary Action Rotherham and other community partners.

We want to hear from people who wish to volunteer, and businesses and community groups that can offer help in the coming weeks and months.
We particularly want to hear from community groups and volunteers who can offer help with:

- tackling loneliness
- prescription collection

COVID19 update 17th August 2020 - We are excited to let you all know that some of our regular user groups have started returning to the centre. If you attend one of the groups, please contact them directly to clarify their returning measures. Masks need to be worn upon entering the centre for your group, and again when leaving. Hand gel is available throughout the centre. The main toilets are not in use, just the one disable toilet in the main corridor. Please be considerate and observe social distancing.

COVID19 update 17th August 2020 - it is proving very difficult for many people including both Wednesday (Memory) Group members and volunteers. They all miss their regular meetings and contact with one another but they’re keeping in touch with people via phone and email. What is the Time Machine?
Promoting & Supporting independence. Providing a safe place in Retford town centre for the anxious or depressed. Preserving quality of life for those living with dementia & their carers. £20 per session including refreshments, free for carers. Transport coming soon.
The Time Machine offers a friendly and fun activity centre designed to exercise mind and body. Each room is decorated to represent a different period in history such as our 1940's dining room, 1950s cinema experience room and the 1960s kitchen. For anyone struggling with mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, we offer music appreciation and health and beauty sessions on makeover days. For adults living with dementia or additional needs we offer seated exercise, memory games, cognitive stimulation therapy, music and introduction to foreign language classes, art, reminiscence and cross-generational sessions. Further events are in the pipeline. All of our classes are aimed at enriching lives in a safe and fun community setting. Situated in a historic and much-loved Georgian building , the Time Machine can be found in the heart of Retford nestling between the library and The Vine. It overlooks Cannon Square and St Swithun's Church and provides a safe and secure environment with carefully vetted and trained staff. Home assessments may be necessary in some cases to establish individual needs in order to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place. Sessions are very reasonably priced at £5-£15 depending on the tutor, content and length of session. We are very lucky to have an enthusiastic group of volunteers who support the staff and are always happy to extend a warm welcome to other potential volunteers.

ACCESS AND NAVIGATION INTO LOCAL SERVICES AND SUPPORT GROUPS
The Community Advisor is a specialist with a wealth of knowledge and experience about services across Bassetlaw, helping individuals to access non-medical support services from voluntary organisations and community groups.
Anyone over the age of 16 who is registered with a Bassetlaw GP can access this service.
You can ask at your GP Reception when the Community Advisor will be visiting your local surgery or contact us directly here at BCVS.
The Community Advisor will discuss with the individual how one of the many voluntary or community services may help them improve their health and wellbeing alongside any existing medical treatment.
The Community Advisor can help you to:
- Identify groups which may offer additional support to help you understand and manage your medical condition
- Access community social groups by giving you a named contact and specific group information
- Access benefits, debt and welfare advice
- Address loneliness and isolation issues by encouraging participation with local activity group

COVID UPDATE FOR RESTARTING OF GROUPS BOTH DUKERIES MEMORY GROUPS.
Due to the new government guidelines from 14th September 2020 we have been forced to make the decision to cancel both of our memory groups until the foreseeable future. Those affected are the Civic Centre, Carlton in Lindrick, Worksop and the Hallcroft Memory Group on Randall Way, Retford.
The process of joining our group is now slightly different with new dates and times in order for us to operate safely. Please read the details below carefully if you wish to attend.
At present, previous attendees will have priority to spaces available at both venues. Any new members who would like to join, please contact Gail Tranter on the number or email below to discuss places and possible waiting lists. Please do not arrive at the venue without prior contact with Gail. This is so we can protect those already present and adhere to strict social distancing within the halls.
Please be aware that the sessions will also be shorter in length.
There will be two sessions at the Civic Centre, Carlton-in-Lindrick on Thursday 17th September 2020. The first is at 10am-11.30am and another from 1.00pm-2.30pm. We will then meet every 3rd Thursday of the month from 10.30am to 12.30pm at this location.
The first session of Hallcroft Memory Group, Randall Way will be on Thursday 1st October 2020 at 10am-11.30am. This is followed with another session on Wednesday 14th October, 10am-11.30am.

Singing for the Brain brings people affected by dementia together to sing a variety of songs they know and love, in a fun and friendly environment. We also do fun vocal exercises that help improve brain activity and well-being.

LIVING AT HOME KIT: ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology is a range of equipment which can help to keep you independent in your own home and provide peace of mind to carers. We provide three assistive technology services:
Telecare – Sensors in your home are linked through your phone line and a special telecare box to a 24 hour monitoring centre. If the sensors detect a danger, they will automatically call the monitoring centre. Staff will immediately call to check how you are, and if necessary can request further help from a friend, family or emergency services.
Standalone Assistive Technology – provides a similar range of sensors to telecare, but instead of the alerts going to a 24 hour monitoring centre, the sensors alert a portable pager unit which can be carried by a carer living in the same home.
Just Checking – a kit of special sensors which can help with assessments of how well a person with dementia is managing daily living activities at home. See the back of this fact sheet for further information.
How can it help?
Telecare and Standalone Assistive Technology equipment can help to alert a carer, or the 24 hour monitoring centre to a number of risks:
Falls - a small device worn on your clothes or wrist can automatically detect a fall and alert either a carer in your home, or the 24 hour telecare monitoring centre. Bed leaving sensors can also tell if you get up in the night and need immediate help from a carer. This can help to prevent a fall occurring in the first place. Bed leaving sensors can also be used to alert the telecare monitoring centre if you fail to return to bed after getting up during the night – perhaps indicating that you have had a fall on the way to the bathroom, and need help.
We target automatic falls detection equipment at people who go unconscious and fall, for example due to a history of stroke, epilepsy or poorly managed diabetes. This equipment is also sometimes suitable if you have memory problems, and forget to call for assistance after a fall using a manual call button.
Wandering – a door sensor can tell if you leave your home at an inappropriate time, such as in the middle of the night when you might put yourself at risk. An alert can be sent to a carer in your own home, or to the 24 hour telecare monitoring centre. The sensor can be linked to a timer, so that it only operates when you are most at risk, e.g overnight.
Managing Your Medication – if memory problems mean you forget to take your tablets, an automatic medication dispenser may help. The device can hold up to 28 doses and alerts when it is time to take your tablets. You will need someone to fill the dispenser for you, and a professional will need to confirm that your tablets are safe to keep inside the unit.
Epilepsy – a bed based sensor can alert a carer, or the 24 hour telecare monitoring centre if you have a seizure at night. The sensor can only detect tonic-clonic seizures, and is not suitable for other types of seizure.
Smoke Detection – if you have dementia or severe memory problems which mean that you would forget how to respond if there was a fire in your home, these sensors will automatically alert the 24 hour monitoring centre to request help.
Extreme Temperatures – a sensor can tell if the temperature in your home falls or rises to a level which could affect your health, and automatically alert the 24 hour telecare monitoring centre.
How much does it cost?
Telecare – The equipment will be supplied and fitted free of charge. However, there is a fixed charge of £2 per week for the 24 hour telecare monitoring service. In addition you will have to pay your telephone service provider for the cost of any calls made by the telecare equipment. Calls are made to an 084415 number which usually costs the same as a local call. However, please check call charges with your service provider as they do vary.

Please note that if you already have a lifeline or warden call system in your home it is not usually possible for us to add the telecare sensors to this service. If you wish to receive the telecare service you would normally have to give notice to your current lifeline service provider and transfer to our telecare service and equipment.
Standalone Assistive Technology – the equipment is supplied and installed free of charge. As the alerts go to someone in your home, there are no ongoing charges.
How do I know if I am eligible?
If you struggle with daily tasks and need long term support, your social care assessment worker will explain if telecare can help to keep you independent in your own home, and arrange for it to be installed. You can request an assessment for long term support by calling us on 0300 500 80 80. If you already receive our long term support services, you can request telecare or standalone assistive technology equipment directly by calling us on the number above.
Just Checking – Dementia Assessment Kit
This system uses sensors placed in each of the rooms of your home and on the final exit doors to help show how well you are managing daily living activities. The system does not use cameras. Information from Just Checking is sent to an activity chart which can be accessed on a secure website by family and professionals. Without Just Checking it can sometimes be difficult if you have dementia to accurately remember or communicate what activities you are doing at home. Just Checking is only installed for a short period (typically 2-4 weeks) to help health and social care professionals to better understand what support you will need to remain safe and independent in your own home. There is no charge during the short assessment period.
Just Checking often shows that people with dementia are managing at home much better than originally thought by family and professionals. The system is only available if you are being assessed for long term support, or receiving our START reablement service.
