Throughout the duration of the building works, Aurora will continue to deliver services to local people to ensure people in Bassetlaw diagnosed with cancer receive vital help and support, and until services can return to the centre in 2021.
The Aurora Charity Shop and Tea Rooms will relocate to the former Dukeries Tea Rooms building on Bridge Street in Worksop in October 2020, for a period of approximately six months and will open daily from Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm.

Have you recently suffered sexual assault?
If you have just been raped or sexually assaulted, you may feel in shock and unsure of what to do. Here are some steps you can take:
- Ensure safety of yourself and any children
- Try to keep warm as you might be in shock
- See if a friend or someone you trust can be with you
Are you unsure whether to report or not?
There is no time limit on reporting an incident, many people decide to report many weeks, months or years after an incident so try not to destroy any evidence that could help if you change your mind. You may feel unsure whether to report the incident to the Police or not and this can a very difficult decision for many people to make. The earlier you tell the Police about an attack, the more likely it is that they will be able to investigate the incident effectively and, potentially, make a prosecution. Forensic evidence is also best obtained within 7 days of an incident occurring. Nottinghamshire Police have a designated Rape Unit with officers who are specially trained in working with incidents of sexual violence. However, you do not have to tell the Police if you don’t want to.

COVID LOCKDOWN NEWS
At lockdown, Rhubarb Farm closed to all volunteers on 23rd March. 10 staff continued to work on site, to maintain our horticultural production, and to adapt our work to providing food bags for people in need, and cooked meals for older people. Staff kept weekly contact with all our volunteers during lockdown, to help them through the isolation and support their resilience in coping with the situation.
We have been delivering about 55 food bags every Friday, and 25 cooked meals every Monday. We have also continued to supply our regular veg bag customers, who all come to collect them on Fridays or Saturday mornings.
Rhubarb Farm receives food every week from Fareshare which is the main source of food for our food bags. But we also receive donations of food from Morrisons of Bolsover, and Tesco of Clowne. In addition, through the support of grants, we buy toiletries to add to the bags, and some vegetables when available from our site.
We have lost a lot of income as a result of losing paying placements, and so have had to apply for a lot of grants.
We have received grants from the following funders, and wish to express our thanks for all their support during this time:
Feeding Derbyshire, Local Improvement Scheme of Nottinghamshire County Council, Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Alpkit Foundation, Charities Aid Foundation, The Fore, Tesco Bags of Help, Aviva Community Fund, Bolsover Connect, Community Leadership Fund of Derbyshire County Council, Bolsover COVID-19 Recovery Fund. We were rejected by several other funders, as the demand for financial help has been huge and funders cannot help all voluntary sector organisations. In addition, we received a £10,000 grant from Bassetlaw District Council because we have a business rateable value. This and the grants we received have helped us sustain the enterprise and continue to work during the pandemic.
We furloughed 7 staff and 2 staff worked from self-isolation. The Job Retention Scheme has enabled us to keep our staff in employment although we have had to make one staff member redundant, because not all our posts are funded.
Since 26th May we have very gradually been bringing volunteers back to site. This has to be a very slow process because of the need to maintain and manage social distancing, hand hygiene and general hygiene. We received a grant to install an outdoor sink, which has helped with this. During lockdown staff re-organised three different buildings: the office became the new shop and Community Pantry. The Men in Sheds container became the new office, and the shop became the new Men in Sheds building! The Mess Room was also refurbished, and distancing and hygiene measures installed.
Rhubarb Farm is resilient, flexible and well-organised and we have high hopes that we will be able to maintain our services and continue to help vulnerable people to change their lives for the better.
An agriculture-based environmental social enterprise based in Langwith on the Derbyshire/Norttinghamshire border, providing a service to the unemployed, recovering drug and alcohol misusers, ex-offenders, young people not in education, employment or training (NEET). Excludes school students, people with learning difficulties, people with mental health issues and physical health issues, ex-service personnel and people with dementia.
The main activity of Rhubarb Farm is organic horticulture. As well as the growing of fruit and vegetables this includes the upkeep and further development of the 8 acre site. This will involve construction, hedge laying, art and crafts, cooking, chicken keeping, IT, amongst many other things
We do offer volunteer placements for people with complex needs. We have a drug and alcohol worker. We can support people one-to-one where needed.
£13 for session. Costs agreed determining on how many hours/type of support needed.
Open Monday-Friday 8.30am-4.30pm

Coronavirus support for people affected by dementia
If you need help living with or supporting somebody with dementia during the coronavirus pandemic, we're here for you. You may feel anxious, scared or lonely. But you are not alone – help is available.
Catching coronavirus
Risks for people with dementia at home
A person living with dementia who has memory problems or confusion may struggle with the guidance and rules around coronavirus. These include frequent handwashing, and social distancing when outside to reduce the risk of catching the virus.
This may mean that, without help to stay safe, someone with dementia may be a bit more likely to become infected with the virus.
If someone has paid carers coming in and out to support them, this may also make the person more likely to catch coronavirus.
The carers should not stop coming, but should use measures like an apron, mask and gloves.
Risks for people with dementia living in residential care
For a person with dementia in a care home, evidence suggests that they are at higher risk of getting coronavirus.
This is partly because frailer older people have weaker immune systems that are less able to fight off infections. It’s also because people in care homes live very closely together.
The person may easily catch coronavirus from another resident, from a care worker or from a communal surface with virus on it.
Talk to the care home about any concerns you have and how you can support the person from a distance.
Severe COVID-19 illness
If a person with dementia does catch coronavirus, they are at higher risk of getting worse COVID-19 illness.
The risk of severe symptoms rises steeply with age, and 9 in 10 deaths have been in people over 60. Most people with dementia and many older carers will fall into a higher risk group on age alone.
Long-term health conditions also significantly raise the risk of severe illness. Some of the more common of these – heart or blood vessel disease and diabetes – are more often seen in people with dementia.
There is some evidence that dementia itself may add a further risk on top of age and these other health conditions, but this is not certain.
It is not clear why, but men and people from black and minority ethnic communities, with or without dementia, are also at increased risk. This link is not explained by age or long-term health conditions.
How does the government define vulnerable?
The issue of who the government recognises as vulnerable from coronavirus is complicated but important. It can affect the support available.
People identified as ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ are those with health conditions that put them at very high risk of severe symptoms if they catch the virus. This will be because they already have a serious lung condition or their immune system is already very weak. These people should have had a letter from their GP and have been staying at home at all times (‘shielding’).
From 1 August in England and Northern Ireland, and from 16 August in Wales, people who’ve been shielding have the choice to stop. Unless their doctor says otherwise, they can follow the same guidance as everyone else, but very carefully and only if they are confident to do so.
This ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ group doesn’t include people with dementia unless they have any of these conditions, including a kidney transplant, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or certain cancers. (See the government’s full list on GOV.UK)
What does this mean for people with dementia?
So for most people with dementia their risk of severe COVID-19 illness is not as high as for the ‘shielded’ group. As explained above, however, people with dementia and many older carers are at higher risk than the general population. Therefore, people with dementia are ‘vulnerable’ on health grounds, but not ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’. This is why they can leave the house to exercise, meet a few people (including others who aren’t in their household) outdoors or shop (if they have to), but must follow the social distancing rules very carefully.
Separately, anyone with dementia and many carers are already seen as ‘vulnerable adults’ by the NHS and social care. This term is commonly used when talking about general support needs or a person’s ability to protect themselves from harm. It is not directly linked to coronavirus.
These terms ‘vulnerable’ and ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ can make a difference, for example when it comes to food shopping.
People in the ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ group in England and Northern Ireland qualified for a food parcel arranged by the government until 1 August (and will do in Wales until 16 August).
After those dates, they and people with dementia should still be treated as vulnerable customers by supermarkets or other suppliers and so be eligible for arrangements such as dedicated shopping times.

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.
Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one, and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issue. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
Psychotherapy can be short-term(a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months or years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned jointly by the patient and therapist.
Access to Service
Our service is available across the county using digital platforms and telephone. Face to face sessions are available in Mansfield and Worksop. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available to suit your needs.

Assessment
In a telephone conversation, our coordinator will ask you about your personal circumstances and what is causing you concern. This will help determine if our service is right for you.
At the assessment, you will be asked about your current situation, past experiences, a brief medical history and how you hope to benefit from counselling. If we cannot provide the correct help for you at this time we will do our best to find alternative support.

We also use these session to provide creativity and fun with our Quiz – keeping the brain active , Photography sessions – sharing snaps to brighten your day ….. and much more.
Our Information sessions can also take place digitally on a 1-1 basis should you require a little more support, sessions take place over zoom and allow you the chance to see and communicate with one of our recovery coaches.

COVID 19 UPDATE
We have coordinated a phased approach to reintroducing visitors to our care homes and retirement living in England, Scotland and Wales. Where a home or scheme has an active outbreak or is in a location experiencing a regional lockdown it will remain closed to visitors until Public Health advise that they are able to open again.
If there is a regional lockdown in place, you will not be able to visit loved ones. Please follow local information and if you are unsure please contact the home for more information. In these cases, the end of an outbreak will be defined when Public Health declares the local lockdown is over. This is to account for national differences and changing guidance.

COVID19 update 13th August 2020 - Lockdown restrictions have eased and the pubs are open! Provided there is no second spike, they may well have eased further by the time you read this. However, many people are still being very careful about taking risks that might result in exposure to the virus. It is difficult to envisage what the future holds and what the North Nottinghamshire Local Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust shall be able to offer its members in the way of talks and activities.
Their winter programme of talks would normally begin in September but even if they are able to offer their usual programme, members might find the risk of attending unacceptable so they are trying to plan for all eventualities. If you would like to have your say, do sign up for email updates and you will be invited to contribute to the discussion in the near future.
The other advantage of signing for updates is that you get regular information on the local wildlife from others in the area who are frequently emailing with their sightings, advice and comments on things such as rare bird visitors, how hedgehogs in the area are faring and progress reports on rescued orphans and injured wildlife. You don’t have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust for this but of course if you are, your contributions go to support wildlife in your area.
If you want any more information or you’d like a chat about things, call Jan on 01777 709974 or 07969 180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com. If you would like to receive email updates of Local Group activities, please email Jan with your request.
We believe in local action. Central to achieving our goals are the efforts of our local groups who work to protect wildlife in their areas. Their activities range from organising walks, talks and practical work on nature reserves to advising on local planning issues and fundraising.
Our local groups act as the chief focus for voluntary participation across the county. They are run by volunteers and new members are always welcome. Find out how you might be able to help Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust on your doorstep.
Lifts from the Worksop area to Idle Valley may be able to be arranged. Please email jan_williamson@tiscali.co.uk. Meetings will run on the second Thursday of the month.

Befriending Service for Older People
COVID19 Update 24th August, tea parties suspeneded for the time being - call companian service (telephone befriending) in operation. Referrals can be made via https://www.reengage.org.uk/contact/
Once a month, normally on a Sunday afternoon, each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer's host home where they join a small group for tea, talk and companionship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the charity drivers and older guests remain the same. This means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Like the rest of the world, Place2Be is adapting as coronavirus (COVID-19) impacts society and everyday lives.
With school closures and lots of uncertainty, we’re working hard to ensure we can support as many children, young people and families as possible during this unsettling time. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing tips, advice, and updates on how to access our services.
With so much uncertainty in the world, children and young people need our emotional support now more than ever. Please donate today to help us to support the mental health of children and families across the UK.
Children are less likely to suffer from serious mental health difficulties in later life if they receive support at an early age, providing a cost saving to adult mental health services.
Growing evidence indicates that promoting positive mental health also improves a range of positive school outcomes, including attitudes to learning, better attendance and lower exclusion rates.

The Mix
--
Free confidential support for young people under 25 via online, social media and mobile
What does post-lockdown mean?
The government has officially eased lockdown rules, meaning as things stand right now, you’re allowed to meet up with more friends and family from different households, visit pubs and restaurants and even have your hair cut!
You still have to follow some social distancing restrictions and rules are slightly different depending on where in the UK you live.
For a full summary, see this BBC article.
Is the easing of lockdown a good thing?
For some people, the end of lockdown might feel like a huge relief. You can go out again! You can see your mates and you can do all the things you’ve been missing so much over the past few months.
But this isn’t the way everyone feels, and many of us might not feel at all ready to go back to “normality.”
- Though you may want to see your friends, the thought of putting yourself or others at risk of getting ill can be scary.
- You might be dealing with loss.
- You might be struggling with your mental or physical health.
- You might not want things to change.
How do I cope with all this change and uncertainty?
Uncertainty can be uncomfortable. When the future is hard to predict it can make you feel like things are out of your control, which can be scary.
Anxiety and fear are reasonable and natural responses to big changes.
If you feel this way there’s nothing wrong with you and there’s no need to feel embarrassed.
- Try talking to someone you trust about the way you’re feeling.
- Sticking to a routine can help to give you a sense of control, even if it’s something small like reading before bed or going for a walk at the same time every day.
- Try writing a list of all the things you can control.
- Get creative! Try singing, dancing, playing music or painting to express how you’re feeling.
What if I don’t feel comfortable going out yet?
Know that you don’t need to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
- Take things at your own pace.
- Communicate with your friends and family about how the changes are making you feel.
- If it makes you feel safer, stick to meeting people in the park in smaller groups.
- If you want to wear a mask when you see people then that’s fine too.
What if I’m shielding?
For those who are shielding (often people with long-term health conditions), the easing of restrictions won’t apply in the same way.
If you or someone in your family is shielding then it can be really stressful to see life returning to normal. It can also give you massive FOMO!
If you’re shielding or you’re worried about someone who is, know that you’re not alone.
Make sure you’re chatting to friends and family as much as you can. You can also chat things through with one of our team.
It might help to switch off from social media sometimes to avoid drawing comparisons.
Things are going back to normal, but I’m dealing with loss
Some people will have lost loved ones during the pandemic. It can be difficult to see normality returning when you’re dealing with grief and loss.
You may not have been able to see a loved one before they passed away. Restrictions may have meant that you couldn’t go to their funeral. This can make things feel twice as hard.
Grieving is one of the hardest things we go through, and everyone reacts differently. It’s ok if you’re struggling and it’s nothing to feel guilty about. But the fact that restrictions are easing also means that you can now see the people in your life that can support you through this time. Staying in touch with your friends and family can make a huge difference.
You might find our article on coping with grief helpful. Take a look at Barnardo’s article on coping with loss.
You could also sign up for bereavement counselling. You can get free counselling with The Mix here.
But, I liked some bits of lockdown!
Did you actually find lockdown nice and peaceful? Some people enjoyed the chance to slow things down and reconnect with the things they love doing.
You might also feel anxious about returning to school, university or to normal working life. But you’re not the only person who’ll be feeling this way.
- Make a list of all the things you enjoyed about lockdown, so you know which habits you want to keep.
- Talk to your employer or your teachers about what you need to feel comfortable going back to a more normal routine.
- Take things slowly; no one is forcing you to rush back to a faster pace of life.
Stay connected
No matter how you’re feeling about a post-lockdown world, it’s important to remember that we’re all going through this together, and there’s no perfect way of coping.
The key thing is to stay connected to those around you and make sure you feel supported and heard.

COVID19 Update 13th August 2020 - Muddy Fork, Retford’s ‘gardening for wellbeing’ project based at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, is of course currently unable to provide a service. Groups are suspended and the worker furloughed. The garden, however, is being maintained by volunteers in the expectation that work will resume in due course and will be needed more than ever.
Muddy Fork participants whose mental health has been adversely affected by lockdown conditions will be glad to return, get to work, and meet up with others. New referrals can be expected given the downturn in wellbeing felt by many. The project also hopes that its corporate wellbeing days will be increasingly used by businesses whose employees have appreciated access to nature during the lockdown period. All this however is dependent on the project’s financial survival. Fundraising possibilities are currently limited: many grant-giving bodies are not accepting applications, and the small donations from groups, clubs and individuals which have helped sustain the project have largely dried up.
Muddy Fork trustees are monitoring developments closely and providing updates on their website, www.muddyfork.org. They will be pleased to hear from supporters, donors and referrers, though referrals cannot actually be progressed at the moment. To get in touch, contact trustee@muddyfork.org.
Mental health issues don't just disappear because there's a pandemic, indeed they can be magnified.
Muddy Fork provides a much needed lifeline to some of our participants and whilst COVID has meant our sessions have had to be suspended, we are still providing support (where possible) to our partcipants. So we need all the help we can get at the moment. Heather is kindly fundraising for Muddy Fork by doing a massive challenge. For twenty-five days, Heather's doing 25 press-ups, every day!
Please follow the link to read more about why Heather's doing the challenge, and then donate and share!
https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/mypage/heatherdavidson
We understand that this is an exceptionally trying time: the threat is real, the fear is real, isolation is now real; Muddy Fork will do its best to support existing participants (this may prove impossible, but we will try!).
New referrals will still be accepted, but not progressed for the time being.
Please take care and look after yourselves and your loved ones.

Telephone friendship schemes are not suitable for everyone. We created the Silver Letters scheme for people who are hearing impaired, and would like a Silver Line Friend, as well as those who just prefer the written word.
Silver Letters are a regular exchange of correspondence between an older person and a Silver Line Friend. All postage is free for both parties, and sent via our mail centre, so costs are covered by The Silver Line.
We match older people to like-minded volunteers. It is not a counselling service and Silver Line Friends will not meet or know the address of the people they write to.
Silver Circles
Silver Circles are facilitated group telephone calls where people with shared interests can discuss topics that interest them with a wider group. This is enjoyed by people who would like to speak with more than one person at a time.
Calls are free for people taking part, as costs are covered by The Silver Line.
Silver Connects
The Silver Connects team provides older people with more intensive support, advice, and help with connecting to local services. Since launching in November 2015, the team has worked on issues ranging from housing and health issues, to finding lunch clubs and even financial concerns.

The Time Machine offers a friendly and fun activity centre designed to exercise mind and body. Each room is decorated to represent a different period in history such as our 1940's dining room, 1950s cinema experience room and the 1960s kitchen. For anyone struggling with mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, we offer music appreciation and health and beauty sessions on makeover days. For adults living with dementia or additional needs we offer seated exercise, memory games, cognitive stimulation therapy, music and introduction to foreign language classes, art, reminiscence and cross-generational sessions. Further events are in the pipeline. All of our classes are aimed at enriching lives in a safe and fun community setting. Situated in a historic and much-loved Georgian building , the Time Machine can be found in the heart of Retford nestling between the library and The Vine. It overlooks Cannon Square and St Swithun's Church and provides a safe and secure environment with carefully vetted and trained staff. Home assessments may be necessary in some cases to establish individual needs in order to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place. Sessions are very reasonably priced at £5-£15 depending on the tutor, content and length of session. We are very lucky to have an enthusiastic group of volunteers who support the staff and are always happy to extend a warm welcome to other potential volunteers.
If you have any enquiries about The Time Machine – our aims, forthcoming events, to look around or possibilities for room hire – please contact our Manager Sally on 07388 115 801 or 07870 505000.
In addition to our classes we offer room hire for training sessions, meetings and private parties.
The Time Machine also offers family support services such as hospital visiting, care home selection, visiting and feedback, birthday visits to deliver presents /flowers/cake from families who don't live in the area, grave tending, personal assistant vetting, referencing and training. Please ask for details.

The Cinnamon Trust
The only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion animals.
A network of 15,000 volunteers “hold hands” with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. We keep them together - for example, we’ll walk a dog every day for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, or even clean out the bird cage, etc.
When staying at home is no longer an option, our Pet Friendly Care Home Register lists care homes and retirement housing happy to accept residents with pets, and providing previous arrangements have been made with us we will take on life time care of a bereaved pet.
The Cinnamon Trust - Peace of mind for owners, love, care and safety for beloved pets. But helping 32,142 people a year with 41,342 animals and running two home from home sanctuaries costs - We need your help to make sure we’re always there.

Linking Lives UK is a Christian charity working with churches and Christian agencies to reach some of the most socially isolated older people in the UK. We are specifically looking to focus our work in some of the highest priority areas as defined by Age UK in their Loneliness Heatmap research findings.
Our core approach involves linking volunteers (who are fully vetted and interviewed) with older people requesting regular home visits. These visits are carried out once a week or once a fortnight and last for between one and two hours. Link Friends are primarily identified through referrals from social workers, GP’s, health visitors, other health/social care professionals and from family members/ friends. Following a referral, an initial assessment is carried out which enables an understanding of the Link Friend’s priorities, health issues and existing sources of support and engagement to be understood. Following the initial assessment, the aim is to match a suitable volunteer with the Link Friend. This process is carried out by considering the location, interests and any hobbies of Link Friends and volunteers available.
Volunteers can also take their friend on occasional outings and other social events and activities may also be arranged regularly by the local scheme. These visits often become a highlight of the week for all involved and result in huge benefits to health and wellbeing.

The Canaan Trust supplies accommodation as the tip of the iceberg of its homeless service. Staff provide individual and collective support 24-7 with staff permanently, physically, available on site, recognizing that the homeless have complex needs which have contributed to their homelessness and they subsequent social exclusion.
The trust currently runs two properties and aims to provide a homely environment for all residents, providing areas for social interaction and friendships to develop.
Jordan House
Is a large nine-bedroom property with an extensive shared kitchen, large lounge, new dinning room, several bathrooms and toilet facilities.
Cranmer Street
Is a shared house with three bedrooms, shared kitchen, lounge, and bathroom.
Both properties are situated close to the town centre’s amenities – doctors, dentists, shops, Post Office, Job Centre, Connexions office and library.
Education – Our college facility
At Jordon House the trust has built a state-of-the-art education facility. The majority of its clients have educational issues requiring assistance with literacy and numeracy.
Working in partnership with Derby College, which provides professional tutors, clients can undertake courses in literacy and numeracy in a familiar environment which is supportive and conducive to their embracing the opportunities provided. This enables them to take examinations in both subjects at a pace appropriate to individual needs and abilities.
The educational facility is called The Manna and is also used to provide learning opportunities in many of the skills for life the majority of us take for granted. Clients are helped with budgeting, personal hygiene, cooking, shopping, sexual health, emotional intelligence, first aid, writing CVs, job searching, letter writing, and official form completion.
Clients, as well as receiving one to one support, can take part in group sessions dealing with issues relating to interpersonal skills, and substance abuse.
Volunteers put classes on in the Manna introducing clients to such subjects as art, sculpture, IT and other extra curricular studies.
Other volunteers help clients enjoy sports such as archery while the project provides clients with the opportunity to use the gym and swimming facilities at West Park.

When you are going through a difficult time, it can be very easy to keep your worries to yourself and believe that you are the only one experiencing such painful feelings. While we all have our own ways of coping, information and support can make a huge difference.
Counselling Directory was set up by a team who know how difficult it can be to find the support and information you need. Being a team who between us have experienced various mental health issues, we know how it feels to be overwhelmed, isolated and somewhat lost.
Through our own experiences, we have learnt how important having relevant information is and how the right support can help transform lives.
Our journey inspired us to share what we have learnt along the way with others. Our team is passionate about counselling and we want to promote the huge benefits talking therapy can have. We know how important it is to find the right counsellor for you and we are dedicated to making that process as simple as possible.

Supporting someone during Covid-19
Checking in on your family, friends and colleagues is always important. But as the coronavirus pandemic continues, this is more important than ever.
Lots of us have felt worried about the coronavirus pandemic, and everyone will feel differently about the changes to lockdown restrictions.
If someone’s feeling anxious or worried, you don’t need to be an expert on mental health to support them. Think about using our three top tips:
1) Check in
If someone doesn’t feel ready to meet face-to-face, picking up the phone, having a video call, starting a group chat or messaging someone on social media lets them know you are there to talk and ready to listen.
2) Listen and reflect
Whether you have a mental health problem or not, this will be a challenging time for our mental health and wellbeing. If someone opens up to you, remember that you don't need to fix things or offer advice. Often just listening, and showing you take them seriously, can help someone to manage.
3) Ask questions
Ask how people are managing, and ask again if you're worried they aren't sharing the full picture. Asking again, with interest, can help someone to open up and explore what they're feeling.
If you are in need of mental health advice and information in relation to Covid-19, our partners Mind and Rethink Mental Illness have a number of resources at the bottom of our web page.
General enquiries
The Time to Change team is currently working from home in line with Government advice on Covid-19. This means we are unable to respond to calls, voicemails or post. To get in touch, please email our team.
Email: info@time-to-change.org.uk
Time to Change is a growing social movement working to change the way we all think and act about mental health problems. We've already reached millions of people and begun to improve attitudes and behaviour.
Despite the progress we’ve made, we know that many people still don’t consider mental health relevant to them. They don’t believe mental health problems are likely to affect them or people they know.
But the reality is that mental health can affect anyone. Statistically, 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That’s why our work is so important. No one should have to fear being treated differently because of a mental health problem.
If you're looking for individual advice, information or support for you or someone else, unfortunately Time to Change can't provide that but there are lots of people who can - visit our Mental health help and support services page for a list of numbers to call.

Coronavirus: how we are supporting participants during the pandemic
Since March 2020 the Coronavirus pandemic has given rise to an unprecedented situation, affecting the lives of us all and resulting in the closure of key services and support agencies. During this time the health, safety and wellbeing of Opportunity and Change participants remains our priority, and the partnership has been working tirelessly to ensure that participants remain supported.
We are continuing to accept new referrals; offering a remote induction to the project and telephone/online support until we are in a position to fully assess participant eligibility and resume face-to-face contact.
The project is responding to the crisis in the following ways:
All face-to-face appointments have been replaced with telephone and online support (e.g. Zoom, WhatsApp, email, etc.)
Frequency of contact has increased; Navigators are checking-in more often to help reduce feelings of isolation
Up to date resources are being shared, including: mental health tools, online training courses and financial support
Participants accessing counselling services have been able to continue to do so via phone or using a virtual meeting platform
Participants who are missing their weekly Skills Plus for Change sessions are being offered alternative support online
Navigator support has adapted to meet the practical needs of participants; ensuring they have access to food parcels, toiletries, utilities and delivering prescriptions where necessary
What is Opportunity and Change?

Nottinghamshire Rural Support For Farmers and Families
NRS provides free volunteer support for farmers, their families and others in the rural community who are going through difficult times that may be leading to anxiety and stress.
Independent working is often thought to be a strength but it can lead to isolation and anxiety. Many farmers work alone in small one-man businesses with little human interaction. Small problems can quickly escalate into larger ones and large problems can sometimes become seem too daunting for an individual to deal with.
Whether business, family, health or farming issues our caseworkers are there to listen, help and remain in contact as long as required.

Telephone Befriending Service
The Telephone Befriending Service is a community based telephone befriending & support service which provides a link to a trained volunteer up to three times a week.
This FREE service is for Older People who are socially isolated or lonely.
The Befriending Service Line offers a friendly chat with someone who can summon help if it is required. Wherever possible we link service users with volunteers who share similar interests in the hope friendships can be formed.
The Telephone Befriending Service can also be a way of helping an Older Person in a crisis e.g. someone recently bereaved, feeling depressed and unsure about the future, by giving emotional support during our The Telephone Befriending Service involvement.
We have achieved the National Council Voluntary Organisations Mentoring & Befriending Approved Provider Standard Award.
What is active age?
Active Age is a community based befriending service. It is for anyone who is over 55 and will enable them to access and attend local groups and activities in their area to help them to explore old or new interests and form new friendships within their own community.
Loneliness can have a significant impact on a person’s wellbeing and is often associated with later life. As you get older it’s common to find that your social circle starts to shrink.
Loneliness can have a devastating impact on our lives and can be a significant cause of depression, impact on physical health and also dementia. There are however ways we can make sure we stay connected with the people in our communities around us as we get older.
Loneliness and isolation does not just affect people who live alone
This FREE service is for older people who are socially isolated or lonely but not necessarily living alone.
It covers the areas of Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover.

b:friend & COVID-19: Older neighbours need our support now more than ever. Become a telephone befriender to check-in on those that are vulnerable. Register today.
Since inception, b:Friend has created, delivered and evaluated hundreds of hours of community social group activity in Doncaster.
b:Friend has an effective blueprint for social groups for older adults focusing on venue, budgeting, marketing to the most isolated individuals and session planning methodology over (usually) a 48-week year.
Each group activity is different… and they’re certainly not boring. From shaking-up Bond-style mocktails, performing street-dance routines, designing Christmas cards, making bird boxes, chocolate tasting sessions and jiving to Bollywood-inspired music… members are exploring new horizons and getting out of their comfort zone each week.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing model forms a clear framework with which b:Friend co-design all group activities. Our Social Clubs ensure attendees are: connected to others through conversation and activity; active through physically engaged sessions; continue to learn through engaging talks, discuss topics of the day and take note of others around them; while giving time, support and attention to others.

Armed Forces Healthcare
How the NHS can help if you are in military service or a veteran.
Armed forces healthcare: how it works
The partnership between the NHS and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has enabled the armed forces to provide modern and advanced clinical care, and give its medical staff the broadest and most up-to-date training and experience.
Structure
Medical services are delivered to servicemen and women by the MoD, the NHS, charities and welfare organisations.
The MoD is responsible for providing:
- primary care: such as general practice, dentistry, occupational medicine and community mental health services within the UK and at defence outposts overseas.
- specialist healthcare: such as secondary care and rehabilitation through the Headley Court Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre.
Services are staffed by regular uniformed and reserve medical personnel from all 3 services: the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
Military casualties
Armed forces personnel returning from operations for treatment in the UK usually go to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), which is also the home of the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM).
During their treatment at QEHB, most military patients are grouped together in a secure trauma ward staffed by military and NHS medical staff.
The RCDM and UHB have earned an excellent reputation for treating the complex injuries typical of military casualties.
Mental health
All serving personnel receive their mental health care through MoD-commissioned services.
Military mental health professionals are sent on operations overseas, so they can provide assessment and care in the field.
In the UK, mental health services work alongside community-based mental health services, to ensure they follow national best practice guidelines.
Care is offered at 15 military Departments of Community Mental Health (DCMH) across the UK (and smaller centres abroad), which provide outpatient mental health care.
Inpatient mental health care services in the UK are provided under contract by a partnership of 8 NHS trusts.
This is led by the South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Service personnel are assessed, stabilised and treated in hospitals as close to their home or parent unit as possible.
The priority is to return injured servicemen and women to work as quickly as possible.
The trusts providing inpatient healthcare are:
- South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
- Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust
- NHS Grampian
- Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust
- Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
- Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
- Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
- NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Transition and veterans health
Everyone leaving the armed forces is given a summary of their medical records, which they are advised to give to their new NHS doctor when they register with them.
A rigorous handover process – known as the Seriously Injured Leavers Protocol (SILP) – is in place for veterans with healthcare requirements after leaving the forces.
Subject to the clinical needs of others, veterans are also entitled to priority NHS treatment for any condition that may have been caused during service.
Individuals within the non-serving armed forces community can access all NHS services, including those services set up to meet the needs of veterans, like prosthetics and mental health.
The Veterans and Reserves Mental Health Programme (VRMHP) (formerly the Medical Assessment Programme) provides mental health assessments for veterans and reservists who have concerns about their mental health as a result of service.
Serving personnel: NHS hospital care
All hospital care is provided by the NHS. This includes emergency and elective care.
Since 2001, the main treatment centre for military patients seriously injured has been the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM).
The RCDM is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), which is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, and is the primary receiving hospital for service personnel injured on operations.
The QEHB also offers non-urgent admissions to service personnel based in England through the NHS e-Referral Service.
These elective cases are managed in line with normal NHS procedures and waiting times.
Military casualties
The main arrival points for military casualties are Birmingham International Airport and RAF Brize Norton, with which UHB has good transport links.
QEHB staff are highly experienced in treating the most common types of injuries to service personnel, such as polytrauma (where someone has suffered multiple traumatic injuries).
Casualties arriving for treatment at QEHB are either placed on a trauma ward or taken straight to intensive care, depending on the severity of their injuries.
Medical notes, images, scans and lab results will be sent ahead of the patient, so by the time they arrive, members of the clinical team at QEHB will have already planned their treatment.
The QEHB military ward is in a designated trauma and orthopaedics ward, where up to 32 military patients are cared for in single rooms or four-bed bays.
The ward has additional features for the use of service personnel only. These cater for their specific requirements and boost the military atmosphere.
It has more staff (both military and civilian) than a normal NHS ward, plus a quiet room for relatives, communal space for patients, and a physiotherapy suite.
Patients get regular visits from defence medical welfare services, who deal with their day-to-day needs and maintain links with their units.
Routine hospital care
For service personnel based in England, non-urgent and routine procedures can be accessed at any NHS hospital through the NHS e-Referral Service.
These admissions will adhere to normal NHS procedures and waiting times, and the amount of choice available may be subject to certain operational criteria.

Combat Stress
Combat Stress is a mental health charity for veterans. It provides specialist treatment and support for veterans with complex mental health issues.
Service families: welfare and support
Everyday family life has its up and downs. Life for members of an armed forces family, whether they're regulars, reservists, or veterans, or their spouses, partners or children, can have additional worries.
These include:
- stress around deployment
- extended and repeated periods of separation from spouses and partners
- social isolation from family and friends
- additional and sudden caring responsibilities
The Armed Forces Covenant says that the whole nation has a moral obligation to the armed forces community and sets out how they should expect to be treated.
The Covenant aims to remove disadvantage, to ensure that the whole armed forces community, including their families, receive the same outcomes as the civilian community. A useful point of contact for covenant issues are the service family federations.
The majority of families of serving personnel, reservists and veterans access and receive their healthcare through the NHS in exactly the same way as the rest of the population.
In specific circumstances (for example, during posting overseas), some families may receive their primary care services from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) through Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) medical centres.
The availability of health and other support services for armed forces families serving overseas can vary between locations.
The MoD has a robust process in place for assessing the support available to family members before an overseas move is confirmed.
This ensures that all essential services are available, whether that be health or education, and that the move to the new location is as smooth as possible.
Additional needs
Service personnel are required to inform their chain of command if they have a family member with additional needs or a disability.
Service families are encouraged to register an additional need or a disability with the chain of command through the single service policies. For the Army, this is mandatory.
Service children who have special educational needs (SEN) should be registered with the Children's Education Advisory Service (CEAS), who can provide advice and support to parents when they move.
Prior to a child with SEN moving overseas, an MoD Assessment of Supportability Overseas (MASO) will be carried out to ensure that essential health, education and social care services are available.
Armed forces families accessing services within the UK and frequently moving due to postings are responsible for informing their local GP, health visitor, dentist, school nurses and other services of their individual circumstances.
Proactively informing these services before a move will ensure medical records are transferred and enable the continuity of any care and support that family members may receive.
The Armed Forces Covenant states that family members should retain their relative position on any NHS waiting list if moving location due to the service person postings.
Welfare organisations
There are a number of organisations, in addition to NHS services, armed forces families can go to to get the advice and support they may sometimes need.
The Navy, Army and RAF all have their own welfare support organisation and information services.
There are other organisations and charities that may be able to offer assistance and provide additional welfare services. Some are listed below.
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA)
The SSAFA is the national charity supporting service personnel, veterans and their families. SSAFA offers support to the community, whether at home, overseas or in an operational environment.
Families federations
The 3 Service Families Federations (Army, Navy and RAF) are the independent voices of Service families.
Each offers independent and confidential advice on a range of issues and works to improve the quality of life for Service families.
They regularly engage with the chain of command, local authorities and government to represent the views of armed forces families.
Each of the 3 Services has its own Welfare Support and Information Service Teams and Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS).
Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS)
The DMWS is a registered charity that works for the MoD and with other charities to provide practical and emotional support to military personnel, their families and other entitled civilians when they're in hospital, rehabilitation or recovery centres.
Veterans: priority NHS treatment
A veteran is someone who has served in the armed forces for at least 1 day. There are around 2.4 million veterans in Great Britain.
When servicemen and women leave the armed forces, their healthcare is the responsibility of the NHS.
It's very important for continuing healthcare that you register with an NHS GP and remember to tell them that you have served. This will help your GP to better understand any service-related health conditions that you may have and ensure that you are referred, where appropriate, to dedicated services for ex-forces.
If you've recently left the armed forces, it's important to give your GP the paperwork that your military medical centre gave you, including any medical records. This will help to ensure your military health record transfers to your NHS health record. It will also give your GP information on your health and ensure that any ongoing care and treatment is continued.
Being flagged as a veteran in your NHS medical notes will help to ensure that you are able to access dedicated services for those who have served in the UK armed forces. These include services for mental health and physical health conditions.
Find out more about the range of dedicated health services for ex-forces (PDF, 278kb).
'No disadvantage'
You should not be disadvantaged from accessing appropriate health services, so it's important that you notify your current GP if you're moving, particularly if you're on a waiting list for medical treatment, so this information can be transferred across.
Details of GP surgeries and other health services within your area can be found by using find GP services.
All veterans are entitled to priority access to NHS care (including hospital, primary or community care) for conditions associated with their time within the armed forces (service-related).
But this is always subject to clinical need and doesn't entitle you to jump the queue ahead of someone with a higher clinical need.
If the NHS service you're dealing with is unaware of priority treatment, you're actively encouraged to tell them about it and ensure you have told them you have served.
Failing that, you can enlist local health care commissioners, your local authority community covenant lead or one of the national service organisations, such as the Royal British Legion, to support you.
For more information on the duty of care owed to service personnel, read the Armed Forces Covenant (PDF, 919kb).
Personalised care programme
If you have served in the UK armed forces and have a complex and lifelong health condition, you may be eligible for the veterans personalised care programme. This is to ensure you have more choice and control over how your care is planned and delivered. It is based on what matters to you, meaning that you can choose how best to live your life and get the right support to do so.
If eligible, you will have a single personalised care plan for all your health and wellbeing needs that is developed with you and a range of organisations, including health and social care and military charities.
As part of this, you may get a personal budget to pay for some of the care and support you need. You should also get more support in the community and be able to access a range of help, such as emotional and practical support from people who have similar health conditions or disabilities.
For more information, read Personalised care for veterans in England (PDF, 685kb)
To apply, you should contact your local clinical commissioning group (CCG).
Veterans: NHS mental health services
Mental illness is common and can affect anyone, including serving and ex-members of the armed forces and their families.
Some people cope with support from family and friends, or by getting help with other issues in their lives. Others need clinical care and treatment, which could be from the NHS, support groups or charities.
Although it's completely normal to experience anxiety or depression after traumatic events, this can be tough to deal with.
Furthermore, the culture of the armed forces can make getting help for a mental health problem appear difficult.
Some people may not experience some of these symptoms until a few years after leaving the armed forces.
They may also delay getting help for a number of reasons, such as thinking they can cope, fear of criticism, or feeling that NHS therapists will not understand.
Read more about the symptoms of depression.
NHS support and treatment
If you think you or your partner may be experiencing mental health difficulties, you can get expert help from the NHS Veterans' Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service (TILS) or the NHS Veterans' Mental Health Complex Treatment Service (CTS).
Both these services are available across England and are provided by specialists in mental health who have an expert understanding of the armed forces.
They'll also help to manage your care and support across other organisations.
Families and carers can find it hard to cope when their loved ones are not well, so, where appropriate, help may be provided for them, too.
NHS Veterans' Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service (TILS)
TILS is a dedicated local-community-based service for veterans and those transitioning out of the armed forces with a discharge date.
The service provides a range of treatment, from recognising the early signs of mental health problems and providing access to early support, to therapeutic treatment for complex mental health difficulties and psychological trauma.
Where appropriate, help is also provided for other needs that may affect mental health and wellbeing – for example, with housing, finances, employment, social support and reducing alcohol consumption.
NHS Veterans' Mental Health Complex Treatment Service (CTS)
CTS is an enhanced local-community-based service for ex-service personnel who have military-related complex mental health problems that have not improved with earlier care and treatment.
The service provides intensive care and treatment including, but not limited to, support for drug and alcohol misuse, physical health, employment, housing, relationships and finances, as well as occupational and trauma-focused therapies.
Accessing NHS mental health care for veterans
To access these services, you need to go through TILS. This can be done by contacting the service directly, or by asking a GP or a military charity to refer you.
To contact the service directly:
- in the north of England, call 0303 123 1145 or email vwals@nhs.net
- in the Midlands or east of England, call 0300 323 0137 or email mevs.mhm@nhs.net
- in London or the southeast of England, call 020 3317 6818 or email cim-tr.veteranstilservice-lse@nhs.net
- in the southwest of England, call 0300 365 0300 or email sc.veterans@nhs.net
To access these services, you must:
- be a resident in England
- have served in the UK armed forces for a full day
- be registered with a GP practice in England or be willing to register with a GP
- provide your military service number or another acceptable form of proof of eligibility
When your referral has been received, you'll be offered an initial face-to-face assessment within 2 weeks and, where appropriate, a first clinical appointment 2 weeks after that.
Register with a GP
It's important to register with an NHS GP and tell them you have served in the armed forces so, where appropriate, you can access these and other dedicated services for veterans.
There are also many charities that provide great services, advice and support for veterans, reservists and family members. Similar services exist in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Some people with mental health issues may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Symptoms can include:
- being constantly anxious
- being unable to relax
- vividly re-experiencing a traumatic event
- avoiding anything that might trigger distressing memories or feelings
- becoming socially isolated
PTSD can lead to problems in relationships and at work, including irritability, anger and substance misuse, particularly alcohol.
While some symptoms, such as nightmares, are normal in the weeks following a traumatic event, symptoms that last longer than this can indicate a problem.
If this happens to you, it's important to get advice from a GP as soon as possible.
If you have not already done so, register with a GP, tell them you served in the armed forces and are a veteran, and bring to their attention any health problems relating to your time in service.
Veterans: NHS services for those with physical injuries
Veterans Trauma Network
The Veterans Trauma Network provides care and treatment to those injured during their time in the armed forces.
The service is available in selected NHS health centres across England close to where people live.
Veterans accessing this service will be cared for by military and civilian clinicians who understand the nature and context of the injuries.
The Veterans Trauma Network works closely with Defence Medical Services, national centres of clinical expertise, the Veterans' Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service, the Veterans' Mental Health Complex Treatment Service and key service charities to make sure patients have a personalised care plan in place.
As families and carers can be seriously impacted when their loved ones are injured, they can also be supported to access services that may help them.
The Veterans Trauma Network also works with veterans who've been injured, as well as their families and academic research partners, to better understand the impact of this work.
The service has been designed following feedback and information from injured veterans and their families.
How to get help from the Veterans Trauma Network
The referral process is simple. Make sure you have told your NHS GP you served in the armed forces and they can refer you by emailing england.veteranstraumanetwork@nhs.net.
You can also be referred by Blind Veterans UK and Style for Soldiers.

NHS prosthetic services for veterans
The veterans' prosthetics programme was set up to put into practise the key findings of 'A better deal for military amputees', a report by Dr Andrew Murrison MP.
Dr Murrison recommended that a small number of multidisciplinary centres should provide specialist prosthetic and rehabilitation services to ensure veterans have access to high-quality care similar to that provided by the armed forces.
9 Disablement Service Centres (DSCs) across England have been selected to provide enhanced services to veterans who have lost a limb as a result of their service in the armed forces:
- Sheffield – Mobility and Specialised Rehabilitation Centre, Northern General Hospital
All DSCs in England can apply to the Veterans Prosthetic Panel (VPP) on behalf of veterans.
Veterans Prosthetic Panel
The VPP was established in 2012 so veterans could apply for funding for high-quality prosthetic limbs, regardless of which DSC they attend. Applications are assessed by a specialist panel.
Who qualifies for VPP funding for prosthetics?
This additional funding is only available to veterans who've lost a limb during military service.
A veteran who has left military service, but whose limb loss is attributable to an injury sustained while in service, also qualifies.
Veterans who lose limbs after they leave the military or while in the military, but not as a result of service, such as in a civilian road traffic accident, will still be able to access services as usual through their local DSC.
To find out more about NHS prosthetics services for veterans, speak to your prosthetist.

GOGA is about more than just being active, it strengthens community spirit, increases confidence and improves mental health. GOGA reaches out to the very least active, disabled and non-disabled people in the community. GOGA aims to provide support to encourage greater activity in a genuinely inclusive environment, helping to build friendships, maintain health, increase independence, reduce stress and boost self-esteem.
In Bassetlaw, partners will introduce active recreation into a voluntary sector led health initiative which supports those with long term illness. The approach maximises the chance of securing full buy in from local health professionals but also helps Bassetlaw develop an approach which connects those with health conditions into local communities through integrated activity provision.
An ‘Active at Home’ booklet has been produced to provide practical guidance to older adults on home-based activities to maintain their strength and balance. It follows concerns that low levels of physical activity in older adults will lead to reduced fitness resulting in loss of independence and need for care in the future.

PTSDUK - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder UK
PTSD UK exisits to share information and raise awareness of PTSD to help everyone who is experiencing it or touched by it.
Evidence suggests that around 70% of people who suffer with PTSD in the UK do not receive any professional help at all, and many of those who are aware they have it are not getting the help and support they need.
Our charity aims to raise awareness of PTSD in three main areas – it’s causes, symptoms and the treatments available. These 3 areas are of vital importance to those suffering with the condition.
Causes: Many people have pre-conceived ideas of PTSD, and what can cause it. There is a widespread misunderstanding that PTSD only affect veterans, or those in the armed forces (likely due to it’s previous name of shell-shock) but it can infact affect anyone, of any age. It’s vital that people are aware if they (or a friend or family member) have suffered a trauma, they should be mindful of trauma symptoms, and the possibility of PTSD.
Symptoms: There are two areas in which knowing the symptoms of PTSD are useful. The first is that people may recognize the symptoms in themselves (or a friend or family member) and reach out for help – starting their recovery process. The other is those who are suffering with PTSD, can understand that what they’re thinking or feeling, or how their body is reacting, is ‘normal’ for someone with PTSD – this can be of huge comfort knowing that once the PTSD is resolved, those symptoms will be too. Some symptoms of PTSD feel totally unconnected to the original trauma or the condition itself, so it’s really important people can recognize just how PTSD can affect them.
Treatments: PTSD is a misunderstood condition in many ways – and no more so than the treatments available. As PTSD arises from a specific trauma (or a number of traumas or sustained traumas) it means that the issues and symptoms can be resolved, and effectively treated. There are a variety of therapies and activities than can help ease PTSD symptoms, some immediate, and some longer term, but the current NICE guidelines recommend EMDR and CBT as the main options for the treatment of PTSD.
In addition to those suffering (and those around them), it’s vital that healthcare professionals are aware of all of these elements to look out for in their patients to avoid misdiagnosis, incorrect treatments and lack of the best resources for their patients.
