Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.
Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one, and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issue. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
Psychotherapy can be short-term(a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months or years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned jointly by the patient and therapist.
Access to Service
Our service is available across the county using digital platforms and telephone. Face to face sessions are available in Mansfield and Worksop. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available to suit your needs.
We can work with clients aged 18 and over through self-referral, a GP referral or through other agencies that support you.
Assessment
In a telephone conversation, our coordinator will ask you about your personal circumstances and what is causing you concern. This will help determine if our service is right for you.
At the assessment, you will be asked about your current situation, past experiences, a brief medical history and how you hope to benefit from counselling. If we cannot provide the correct help for you at this time we will do our best to find alternative support.
After the assessment, you will be placed on our waiting list. If you would like any further information about our Counselling Service please contact our main office on 0800 470 0203 and speak to our team for more information.
Digital Support
New Digital Services
Peer support services have been a part of Nottinghamshire Mind for many years now and provide a platform for individuals to share experiences and build support networks, this has proven to improve emotional health, wellbeing and a sense of belonging for both those who deliver and receive support.
Through the current pandemic we’ve encouraged members old and new to take part in our ever growing platform or digital services, empowering some to try something new for the very first time.
At present we offer app based peer support sessions daily Monday to Thursday.
You’ll have the opportunity to feel part of a community, share experiences, feelings and thoughts and build friendships, all of which will promote and support you to maintain positive wellbeing.
Our use of the GroupMe app allows our recovery coaches to promote ideas and approaches that may be helpful to you, such as relaxation tips, exercises, talking therapies and near crisis planning. We also use these session to provide creativity and fun with our Quiz – keeping the brain active , Photography sessions – sharing snaps to brighten your day ….. and much more.
Our Information sessions can also take place digitally on a 1-1 basis should you require a little more support, sessions take place over zoom and allow you the chance to see and communicate with one of our recovery coaches.
Sessions are 30 minute and you don’t need to have your camera switched on but you’ll be able to see our recovery coach, we feel this helps build a better relationship for the client.
If you are interested in any of the services above please contact one of our recovery coaches.

Like the rest of the world, Place2Be is adapting as coronavirus (COVID-19) impacts society and everyday lives.
With school closures and lots of uncertainty, we’re working hard to ensure we can support as many children, young people and families as possible during this unsettling time. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing tips, advice, and updates on how to access our services.
With so much uncertainty in the world, children and young people need our emotional support now more than ever. Please donate today to help us to support the mental health of children and families across the UK.
Children are less likely to suffer from serious mental health difficulties in later life if they receive support at an early age, providing a cost saving to adult mental health services.
Growing evidence indicates that promoting positive mental health also improves a range of positive school outcomes, including attitudes to learning, better attendance and lower exclusion rates.

Coronavirus Information
On this page you will find advice and information around the Coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic – including Together’s approach to the situation and how we’re supporting the people who use our services, as well as useful resources and links to content.
Update – Monday 8 June 2020 – In response to the UK Government’s publication of “Our Plan to Rebuild: The UK Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy”, Together is now carefully considering how, as an organisation, we move forward from our response to the initial impact of Covid-19. We are developing roadmap for the organisation to return all of our services to face to face work in line with considerations of safety, advice and best practice. This will ensure that we are making decisions based the best advice available to us.
We will need to proceed with caution to ensure that we protect our services and that we are making the right decisions that take into account the location and type of support being offered, the specific needs and circumstances of our service users and consideration of the welfare of our staff and volunteers.
Update – Monday 11 May 2020 – We acknowledge the Prime Minister’s statement on the 10th May outlining the government’s future planning and approach to Covid-19. We have started to prepare our operational response and will look to incorporate the detailed guidance once published, in order to ensure the effective and safe operating of our services.
Our national office
Together’s national office in London is currently closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. You can still contact our national office on 020 7780 7300 or at contact-us@together-uk.org.
As a result, we can’t be on site to collect post – so wherever possible, please use email to reach us at contact-us@together-uk.org. We appreciate that in some cases posting of hard copy documents is essential. We are working with Royal Mail to ensure post is directed and we can confirm post is still operational for the organisation. We ask though that if you do post items, please bear with us as it may take more time to respond to these due to the alternative arrangements we’re having to make – and as a result, we can’t guarantee receipt or a timely response. If you have any questions, please contact us at contact-us@together-uk.org.
Our services
All of Together’s services are currently still operational. To contact a service directly, please use our Service Finder, or choose a service under Our Services in the menu.
Please note that to protect the safety and wellbeing of our service users and staff during the Covid-19 pandemic, some of our services currently cannot accept visitors or are operating remotely. Some services have also moved from delivering face-to-face support to providing support via phone or online. Please check with services directly to find out how they are currently delivering support.
How we’re supporting people who use Together services
Together staff are doing all that we can to continue to support the people we work alongside. They have been working together, not giving up in the face of difficult and challenging situations and involving the people we work alongside to ensure they are supported in the way they have chosen and need to be at this time. Staff are spending extra time to listen, hear and respond to the understandable anxieties and distress of the people who use our services. We are working collaboratively with other organisations and agencies to explore sharing resources.
The senior leadership team at Together is acting in every conceivable way we can to ensure our services keep running whilst also looking out for our staff, volunteers and the people we are here to serve. That includes looking out for the community in which our services operate and the other organisations and agencies that we come into contact with. We will do our part to help build resilience and strengthen connectedness.
Managing mental health and welllbeing during coronavirus and social distancing
Each and everyone of us is being presented with a new and unprecedented challenge to our mental wellbeing in coping with the changes to our lives brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. This is something none of us have experienced before and it can cause stress and anxiety amongst other emotions whether you have experienced mental distress previously or not whether that be because of concerns around you health or that of your loved ones or coping with social distancing and lock down measures.
There is a lot to consider and everyone’s experience is different and we see that across the different types of services we provide around England from residential homes, to community support and advocacy services and supporting people in criminal justice settings. A lot of other charities have produced advice and tips on how to manage this but our core principle is service user leadership and we believe in the value of lived experience so we will be compiling a selection of coping strategies and activities from across our organisation people have found useful. These tips may not be relevant for everyone but we hope the variety of them will show different perspectives and hopefully there will be useful elements people can take away. We will publish these tips in the coming weeks.
General tips for looking after your mental wellbeing while at home
Of all the advice we’ve seen online, this was one of the most clear and concise from Sarah Kendrick, psychotherapist for Shout which was on the BBC website:
Be safe and stay connected – Self-isolation doesn’t mean cutting off all communication, in fact, it’s more important than ever to talk and listen, share stories and advice, and stay in touch with the people who matter to you.
Take notice of things that make you feel good – Eating healthy food, keeping moving by going out for walks or exercising can help us to feel good. Notice the beauty outside your window or on a walk around the block, taking time to acknowledge people you see.
Go on an information mini-break – the endless updates from news outlets and people on social media can be completely overwhelming. Pick one trusted source of information and visit it once a day only.
Share how you’re feeling – Talk to loved ones and friends. Talking has the effect of lifting our mood and really helps us to begin to feel more positive if we’re having a tough time.
Keep moving – Find ways to move your body and your mood every day. It’s OK to go for a walk, run or ride your bike, as long as you avoid other people.
Stick to a routine – This sounds dull but it will help you get through each day. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time, eat regularly, shower, change your clothes, get some fresh air, book in video-chats with colleagues or friends, do your chores. Make time for fun!
Find ways to relax and distract – Finding things that help you breathe deeply, consciously setting your worries aside or focusing on the moment to recharge can be helpful. Distracting yourself by watching films or TV programmes, reading or listening to music will help you to set things in context and provide relief from anxious feelings.

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

Coronavirus: ensuring a safe home during the crisis.
We need to stand together through this crisis.
Through our helpline, we’re hearing from people who are worried about how they'll pay the rent, whether they could be made homeless, or if they'll be stuck in unsafe housing.
The government has paused evictions to protect renters but this is due to end in August. Many are losing their jobs and unable to pay their rent. With the housing element of Universal Credit far too low, people across the country are at risk of huge debts and even losing their home once the evictions ban lifts. More needs to be done.
This is a national emergency and it’s right that government is treating it like that. But we will keep pressing them to ensure people have safe and secure homes to get through it. To achieve this, we need to:
- Increase housing benefit to cover the cost of average rents, and lift the benefit cap so people can access this money
- Give judges real power to ensure no-one is evicted as a result of coronavirus
- Ensure anyone with nowhere safe to stay can access emergency accommodation where they can follow public health advice
Now more than ever people need a safe and secure place to call home.
Support our call for action to help those facing urgent housing issues at this time.
