WHAT IS THE STAYING WELL EXPERT PATIENTS PROGRAMME?
The Staying Well Expert Patients Programme (EPP) is a ‘chronic disease self-management course’ (CDSMC), a new government initiative to help people living with long term conditions maintain their health and improve their quality of life through a self management course led by someone else with a long term health condition.
Self management programmes have been running in the USA since the 1970s and came to this country in 1994. Over this time a substantial body of clinical research and experiential feedback has built up testifying to its efficiency.
The primary aim is not to impart medical information but to facilitate the development of self management skills, such as problem solving and goal setting.
The course has been designed to help people with a chronic or long-term illness regain as much control over their physical and emotional well-being as possible. It complements existing health care programmes and treatments, empowering participants to be more informed and better able to develop partnerships with their medical practitioners.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE STAYING WELL EXPERT PATIENTS PROGRAMME?
It is a generic, time-limited course, suitable for people who have any long-term health condition. For example: Arthritis, Heart Disease, Stroke, Depression, MS, Epilepsy, ME, Schizophrenia, Fibromyalagia, Diabetes, HIV, indeed any condition that impacts on a persons life. The Tutors are themselves living with long-term conditions.
Tutors use a detailed, scripted manual, underpinned by ongoing research. There is a strong emphasis on participants setting practical and achievable action plans that are evaluated weekly.
The course is informal but structured allowing an equal amount of time for discussion and information. It is held in a community rather than health venue.
What does the Course involve?
The course consists of one 2½ hour session once a week for six weeks, the maximum number of participants on each course is 16 plus two tutors who also live with a long-term condition.
The areas covered include:
Goal setting/action planning
Problem solving
Relaxation/exercise
Symptom management techniques
Fatigue management
Dealing with emotions
Communication
Medication
Living wills/power of attorney
Healthy Eating
Distraction
Guided imagery
The course is interative, informal and friendly.
Research shows that people who have attended the course:
Have greater confidence in dealing with their illness, experience less pain, fatigue, depression and anxiety. They are more likely to continue with exercise and relaxation techniques; make fewer visits to their GP and have better communication with health professionals.
Why does the course work so well?
Because individuals with different conditions share many of the same problems, no matter what illness individuals live with it is often the consequences of that illness that are more problematic than the condition itself. When you can’t do what you used to be able to and your family and friends don’t understand, anger, frustration, loss of job or mobility, depression and pain can so easily become a cycle of despair.
Feedback from participants countrywide has been excellent and although this is something very new for the NHS it is something people want.
Yes, the course is structured but there is time for short discussions to help us learn from each other and gain support and encouragement.
Courses are available throughout Bassetlaw please contact us for more details.

Aurora services set to relocate to enable building work to commence
02 October 2020
Aurora Wellbeing in Worksop has this week relocated a number of vital services in preparation for the start of building works and the transformation of the Old Library Building on Memorial Avenue.
Aurora Wellbeing, a local charity that supports people in Bassetlaw affected by cancer and long term health conditions was in 2019 awarded £1.56M from the National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF), boosted to £2M with support from key stakeholders, to transform the Old Library Building where the Aurora charity is based.
Throughout the duration of the building works, Aurora will continue to deliver services to local people to ensure people in Bassetlaw diagnosed with cancer receive vital help and support, and until services can return to the centre in 2021.
The Aurora Charity Shop and Tea Rooms will relocate to the former Dukeries Tea Rooms building on Bridge Street in Worksop in October 2020, for a period of approximately six months and will open daily from Monday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm.
Aurora beauty therapy services will continue to deliver services from Sparkles Beauty, Kilton Road, Worksop and customers are asked to call 0750 3612084 during this period to book appointments.
Aurora Wellbeing Practitioners will continue to provide health needs assessments and support across the Bassetlaw area (working remotely) to help support people and their families with a cancer diagnosis, and to offer emotional support, counselling and workshops.
Aurora exercise classes, including Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi, will continue either online via Zoom or at locations across the locality.
Our support lines are open Monday - Friday (9 am-5 pm). Please call us on 01909 470985 or email admin@aurorawellbeing.org.uk

Valerie’s tearooms
They are operating a takeaway service from their much loved Valerie’s Tearooms and welcome old and new friends to visit and take away a hot drink, slice of cake or light refreshments. They also have a competitive meal deal on offer.
Aurora services
Aurora continues to offer telephone-based support and services to people and their families affected by cancer or long term health conditions. Every day their advisors speak to people who are living with cancer, newly diagnosed or struggling to move forward with life after treatment, and for many, they face additional difficulties due to the coronavirus outbreak. Right now, it is their priority to stay in touch with clients, volunteers and many friends of the charity. They are continuing to offer support and a friendly listening ear to anyone who may be struggling with feelings of anxiety, loneliness or depression and encourage you to chat about your concerns. Contact Aurora via telephone, Monday to Friday from 10.00am to 4.00pm, on 01909 470985.
Aurora is continuing to offer a range of support services whilst the centre remains closed, and they continue to share information and advice and arrange counselling and bereavement support. Their support groups have moved online, along with Aurora courses and exercise classes. Anyone interested is encouraged to get in touch or to subscribe to their newsletter to keep up to date. Visit www.aurorawellbeing.org.uk/worksop and click on the link.
The rest of Aurora’s facilities in the centre will be monitored closely and will become available when it is safe to do so. They are lucky to be situated in the delightful Memorial Gardens so go along, enjoy the gardens and visit the Aurora Centre.

See more about Parkinson’s and coronavirus on our dedicated page or order our Parkinson's and Coronavirus: your questions answered booklet.
Due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, all face to face activities run by Parkinson's UK are cancelled until further notice. Some activities have now moved online. You can get in touch with your local group for up to date information using the information on our website.
For people with Parkinson’s there’s no increased risk of catching Coronavirus, however the virus can affect people with underlying health conditions differently. So to minimise risk we advise people with Parkinson’s not to meet up in person for activities and meetings.
We know that support and friendship from group activities is important and the charity is here to support you. You can contact our helpline on 0808 800 0303. COVID19 update, 13th August 2020 - When the lockdown happened, members of the Retford and District MS Family Support Group were quick to respond to the need to keep in touch with each other and continue where possible with physical activities where they could.
They soon discovered Zoom, which has been a lifeline to many members facing loneliness during the lockdown. Members without internet have been receiving regular phone calls and condensed versions of the group’s monthly newsletter to keep everyone involved, with the added section of MS family news where members have contributed sharing how the lockdown and other restrictions has affected their home life, how they are filling their time and, in many cases, limited members’ access to the family PC that has been taken over by home schooling.
The group Zoom calendar is fully booked for five days of the week and well supported by members taking part in social and movement therapy events consisting of seated Yoga, Tai Chi, dance and neuro Pilates as well as two quizzes a week devised by members, coffee and chat mornings and a men-only session.
The downside of the lockdown has been the cancellation of fundraising events the group always look forward to holding each year, and the planned Team Retford MS Pentathlon, when local people with MS and supporters raise money for Bassetlaw NHS neuro service, also had to be cancelled. Members were also looking forward to taking part, just for fun, in an indoor sky dive in September and it is very doubtful that will now be able to go ahead.
Anyone who is affected by Multiple Sclerosis is welcome to become part of the group and further details can be obtained from retford@mssociety.org.uk
Newcomers always welcome. We arrange a wide range of weekly & monthly events for members & include MS drop in clinic, monthly newsletter, self help info, signposting for professional help, fundraising for local MS community, art class, neuro physio based Pilates exercise, swim/flot sessions, mels out & a monthly coffee cake & chat morning.

Stopping smoking and protection and prevention from tobacco use
From the 1st April, Your Health, Your Way is the new service commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council to support Nottinghamshire residents (children, young people, adults and families) to get active, lose weight, reduce alcohol intake and quit smoking. The service will also provide support for falls prevention and family weight management.
Support to quit smoking
We all know smoking is bad for you, your family and your friends. There are lots of reasons to stop smoking as well as plenty of support to quit. It's never too late to give up smoking, and research suggests that smokers who stop with support are four times more likely to succeed, and so you do not have to do it on your own.
There is a range of local support that can help you quit smoking by:
- assessing what's going to help you
- explaining what's happening to your body as you give up
- offering free stop smoking aids like nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), which can be given to you on the spot, as well as the stop smoking medication, Champix
You can get this support from the specialist stop smoking service Your Health, Your Way (details above).
Online support and further information is also available through:
You can also call:
- the national quit smoking helpline on 0800 0224332
- 0800 1699169 for support with quitting during pregnancy.

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

Asthma Uk
If you have asthma, or you're a parent of a child with asthma, you're in the right place for expert advice.
COVID19 update, 20th July 2020 - for further information please visit https://www.asthma.org.uk/advice/triggers/coronavirus-covid-19/
Asthma is a condition that affects your airways – the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. But aside from this ‘textbook’ definition, asthma means different things to different people. So what does it mean to you?
Is it a new diagnosis you’re trying to get your head around? Have you been managing it well for years? Or are you struggling to cope with your symptoms?
Does it run in the family? Are you trying to understand the new medicines your child has been given? Is it your motivation for getting fitter and/or fundraising? Or the reason you've given up smoking?
Whatever asthma means to you, it’s useful to know more about how it affects you, both physically and emotionally, and why.
The more you understand the condition, the better position you’re in to work out with your healthcare team (i.e. your GP, asthma nurse and/or consultant) how to manage it well. Managing it well means that asthma will affect your life as little as possible.
If you have asthma:
If you’ve just been diagnosed with asthma, or even if you’ve had the condition for many years, you may have a long list of questions. To help you find some answers, we’ve put together lots of useful information - find what you need via the links above.
If you think you may have asthma:
Asthma is a complex condition to diagnose. We have lots of information about getting a diagnosis.
If your child has asthma
You may have lots of questions if your child’s recently been diagnosed. We’ve gathered all the information you need, plus lots of simple expert tips, in our Asthma And Your Child section.
If you think your child may have asthma
It can take time to get a diagnosis of asthma for your child. In the meantime, you probably have lots of questions and concerns. Our page on diagnosing asthma in children will give you the answers you need.

Advice on coronavirus (Covid-19) for people with eczema
Which types of face coverings are the most eczema-friendly?
Face coverings made from 100% cotton that can be washed regularly are probably the most eczema-friendly type of covering. Cloth ear loops are less likely to irritate the skin than elastic ones. Also consider coverings that tie around the back of the head. ‘Mask headbands’ or hats with buttons are another option. With these, the elastic loops around the buttons rather than your ears. ‘Neck gaiters’, ‘buffs’ or ‘tube scarfs’, which are basically a tube of material, might suit too – if 100% cotton.
Make sure the covering fits snugly around your nose and mouth but isn’t tight.
Avoid applying ointment emollients to the face shortly before you put on a covering, as they might make the face too hot.
Supplier suggestions:
- Greenfibres sells organic cotton face masks.
- Pure Cotton Comfort sells organic cotton face masks for adults and children.
- Skinnies sells viscose face masks with cloth rather than elastic ear loops.
- Etsy has lots of different types of face coverings for sale. Search for the type you’re interested in.
- ‘Handybands’ from Seasalt have been recommended to us by a Facebook follower. They can be used as face coverings as well as head bands. Organic cotton face masks are also available from Seasalt.
- There are lots of guides and video tutorials showing you how to make different types of face covering, for example: BBC, YouTube.
If you have severe facial eczema that is made worse by wearing a face covering, the Government has exemption badges and cards on its website that you can print out.
How can I mitigate the effects of frequent hand-washing?
We recommend that people with eczema follow the government guidance to wash hands with soap and water, rather than an emollient soap substitute, as much as practically possible. Soap is considered to be more effective than emollient at breaking the lipid envelope surrounding coronavirus particles, and removing the virus from the skin.
Frequent washing of hands with soap can, however, cause problems for people with eczema, including dry skin and hand eczema. It is very important people find ways of managing dry skin and hand eczema that may be caused or worsened by frequent washing with soap.
Strategies for this include:
- After washing hands with soap and water, re-wash using emollient to help protect the skin.
- Use emollients to moisturise the hands after washing and at other times during the day when the skin feels dry and sore.
- Dry hands well after washing by gently patting them dry, not rubbing. When drying your hands, take special care between the fingers where the skin is more prone to dryness and cracking, and build-up of soap residue.
- Rehydrate sore dry hands overnight, using an ointment and wearing clean cotton gloves.
- Wear nitrile gloves if you need to handle detergents or other cleaning products that can irritate the skin. These provide a physical barrier for the skin and can be purchased from chemists or from online shops.
- If you develop more severe hand eczema or suspect your skin is infected, you should contact your GP and may need prescription medicine to reduce the inflammation.
If you feel you need to use sanitising gel (which may irritate your eczema), apply your usual emollient afterwards to minimise any irritant effect.
In public places where you can’t avoid touching surfaces, try not to touch your nose, eyes or mouth (or your child’s) because the virus gets in through mucous membranes.
What are the most eczema-friendly soaps?
We asked our followers on our social media channels which soaps they would recommend. Not all products will suit everyone, but people with eczema have said the following brands/products have worked well for them:
- Dove
- Faith in Nature

- Olive oil soaps
We don’t recommend applying olive oil to the skin as it can damage the skin barrier, but olive oil soaps seem to be well-tolerated by many people with eczema who responded to our request for soap recommendations.
How can I see a GP or dermatologist?
Please don’t delay in getting healthcare. If you need urgent medical help and it’s not an emergency, contact your GP or NHS 111 online or telephone NHS 111 first. Your GP practice should offer online, telephone and video consultations. If you are invited in for a face-to-face appointment, infection control measures are in place to keep patients and staff safe.
The Covid-19 NICE guidance says that dermatology departments should ‘optimise the use of teledermatology, such as telephone and video consultations’. If your dermatology appointment has been cancelled due to the crisis, try to find out whether a telephone or video consultation would be possible instead.
What is the current advice regarding shielding?
The shielding programme was paused in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on 31 July. People who were shielding are now advised to adopt strict social distancing rather than full shielding measures.
The Chief Medical Officer for Wales has advised that shielding should continue until 16 August.

Am I more likely to develop Covid-19 as a result of having eczema?
There is no evidence to suggest that people with eczema are more likely to develop Covid-19 or to experience a more severe form of the condition if they do develop it.
If I have open cracks or splits in my skin, am I more likely to pick up Covid-19?
We don’t know for certain at the moment whether this is or is not the case. However, because coronavirus seems to be spread through respiratory droplets from the coughs and sneezes of an infected person that land in the mouths, noses and airways of people nearby, it seems to be unlikely that a damaged skin barrier would increase the risk of developing Covid-19.
Our confidential telephone and email Helpline is at the heart of our work, providing information, support and reassurance to people struggling to cope with eczema. Each year, thousands of people contact the confidential Eczema Helpline via email or telephone.
We are not medically qualified and do not diagnose, prescribe, nor are we a substitute for individual medical advice, but we have wealth of experiance about living with eczema and the challenges it brings. (We are not able to answer queries from non-UK residents as terminology, healthcare systems and treatments may differ in your country of residence, which may cause confusion.)
Call the Helpline - 0800 089 1122 - Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm
This email Helpline via helpline@eczema.org is open to all UK residents who are personally affected by eczema. Please allow 5 working days for us to reply to you.

Supporting someone during Covid-19
Checking in on your family, friends and colleagues is always important. But as the coronavirus pandemic continues, this is more important than ever.
Lots of us have felt worried about the coronavirus pandemic, and everyone will feel differently about the changes to lockdown restrictions.
If someone’s feeling anxious or worried, you don’t need to be an expert on mental health to support them. Think about using our three top tips:
1) Check in
If someone doesn’t feel ready to meet face-to-face, picking up the phone, having a video call, starting a group chat or messaging someone on social media lets them know you are there to talk and ready to listen.
2) Listen and reflect
Whether you have a mental health problem or not, this will be a challenging time for our mental health and wellbeing. If someone opens up to you, remember that you don't need to fix things or offer advice. Often just listening, and showing you take them seriously, can help someone to manage.
3) Ask questions
Ask how people are managing, and ask again if you're worried they aren't sharing the full picture. Asking again, with interest, can help someone to open up and explore what they're feeling.
If you are in need of mental health advice and information in relation to Covid-19, our partners Mind and Rethink Mental Illness have a number of resources at the bottom of our web page.
General enquiries
The Time to Change team is currently working from home in line with Government advice on Covid-19. This means we are unable to respond to calls, voicemails or post. To get in touch, please email our team.
Email: info@time-to-change.org.uk
Time to Change is a growing social movement working to change the way we all think and act about mental health problems. We've already reached millions of people and begun to improve attitudes and behaviour.
Despite the progress we’ve made, we know that many people still don’t consider mental health relevant to them. They don’t believe mental health problems are likely to affect them or people they know.
But the reality is that mental health can affect anyone. Statistically, 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That’s why our work is so important. No one should have to fear being treated differently because of a mental health problem.
If you're looking for individual advice, information or support for you or someone else, unfortunately Time to Change can't provide that but there are lots of people who can - visit our Mental health help and support services page for a list of numbers to call.

Coronavirus: how we are supporting participants during the pandemic
Since March 2020 the Coronavirus pandemic has given rise to an unprecedented situation, affecting the lives of us all and resulting in the closure of key services and support agencies. During this time the health, safety and wellbeing of Opportunity and Change participants remains our priority, and the partnership has been working tirelessly to ensure that participants remain supported.
We are continuing to accept new referrals; offering a remote induction to the project and telephone/online support until we are in a position to fully assess participant eligibility and resume face-to-face contact.
The project is responding to the crisis in the following ways:
All face-to-face appointments have been replaced with telephone and online support (e.g. Zoom, WhatsApp, email, etc.)
Frequency of contact has increased; Navigators are checking-in more often to help reduce feelings of isolation
Up to date resources are being shared, including: mental health tools, online training courses and financial support
Participants accessing counselling services have been able to continue to do so via phone or using a virtual meeting platform
Participants who are missing their weekly Skills Plus for Change sessions are being offered alternative support online
Navigator support has adapted to meet the practical needs of participants; ensuring they have access to food parcels, toiletries, utilities and delivering prescriptions where necessary
