Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing.
Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one, and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. There are several different types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issue. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.
Psychotherapy can be short-term(a few sessions), dealing with immediate issues, or long-term (months or years), dealing with longstanding and complex issues. The goals of treatment and arrangements for how often and how long to meet are planned jointly by the patient and therapist.
Access to Service
Our service is available across the county using digital platforms and telephone. Face to face sessions are available in Mansfield and Worksop. Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available to suit your needs.
We can work with clients aged 18 and over through self-referral, a GP referral or through other agencies that support you.
Assessment
In a telephone conversation, our coordinator will ask you about your personal circumstances and what is causing you concern. This will help determine if our service is right for you.
At the assessment, you will be asked about your current situation, past experiences, a brief medical history and how you hope to benefit from counselling. If we cannot provide the correct help for you at this time we will do our best to find alternative support.
After the assessment, you will be placed on our waiting list. If you would like any further information about our Counselling Service please contact our main office on 0800 470 0203 and speak to our team for more information.
Digital Support
New Digital Services
Peer support services have been a part of Nottinghamshire Mind for many years now and provide a platform for individuals to share experiences and build support networks, this has proven to improve emotional health, wellbeing and a sense of belonging for both those who deliver and receive support.
Through the current pandemic we’ve encouraged members old and new to take part in our ever growing platform or digital services, empowering some to try something new for the very first time.
At present we offer app based peer support sessions daily Monday to Thursday.
You’ll have the opportunity to feel part of a community, share experiences, feelings and thoughts and build friendships, all of which will promote and support you to maintain positive wellbeing.
Our use of the GroupMe app allows our recovery coaches to promote ideas and approaches that may be helpful to you, such as relaxation tips, exercises, talking therapies and near crisis planning. We also use these session to provide creativity and fun with our Quiz – keeping the brain active , Photography sessions – sharing snaps to brighten your day ….. and much more.
Our Information sessions can also take place digitally on a 1-1 basis should you require a little more support, sessions take place over zoom and allow you the chance to see and communicate with one of our recovery coaches.
Sessions are 30 minute and you don’t need to have your camera switched on but you’ll be able to see our recovery coach, we feel this helps build a better relationship for the client.
If you are interested in any of the services above please contact one of our recovery coaches.

Opening Hours: Monday - Friday 08.00 am - 8.00 pm Saturday 09.00 am - 5.00pm
The service supports Victims and survivors to be resilient and in doing so are less likely to be re-victimised; empowered to cope and recover from crime and anti-social behaviour by timely and effective victim-centred support from local services, families and communities.
Victims do not have to report a crime to access the service. Victims of both recorded and self-reported crime are tracked at all points in their journey and given access to information, practical support and advice and where appropriate, referral to ‘cope, recover and empowerment’ support services in their local communities.
Victim CARE ensures that the support will be victim-centred and outcome focussed. It will ensure that the needs of the victim are considered and supported at every stage of the criminal justice process.
The service is provided by a team of experienced professional case workers, giving one to one support to victims of crime and ASB. The team is supported by a committed and highly trained team of volunteers. The aim is to improve victims’ experience with the criminal justice system and associated support services.
Types of support
Victims of crime and anti-social behaviour benefit from enhanced help and support with a new-style service, designed around the needs of victims to help them cope and recover from their experience and empower them to become more resilient
- Tailored emotional and practical support, advocacy and restorative justice determined through a ‘needs assessment’, focusing on the level of harm caused by the crime and the vulnerability of the victim.
- A dedicated Caseworker providing one to one support to each victim, making it less stressful for them and reducing the number of times they are asked to tell their story
- Access to restorative justice services arranged by the Caseworker, which could include facilitating dialogue with a person with a conviction. Restorative justice brings those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.

Refuge

Website: https://www.refuge.org.uk/
Refuge supports women and children who experience all forms of violence and abuse, including domestic violence, sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, so-called ‘honour’-based violence, and human trafficking and modern slavery.
Whoever you are, and whatever you have been through, Refuge is here for you. We tailor our support to suit your individual needs and we run a range of services you can access, including refuges, community-based projects, culturally-specific services, services for children and support for women going through the criminal justice system.
We won’t judge you or tell you what to do. We won’t tell anyone you have been in touch with us. Although it may feel impossible now, we can support you to rebuild your life free from violence and fear. Whatever you decide, your safety is always our priority.
COVID-19/Coronavirus: Safety tips for survivors
Q. How do I know if I’m experiencing abuse?
Domestic abuse isn’t always physical – it’s a pattern of controlling, threatening and coercive behaviour, that can also be emotional, economic, psychological or sexual. Abuse is a choice a perpetrator makes and isolation is already used by many perpetrators as a tool of control. If you need help recognising the signs of abuse, you can find information and resources on www.refuge.org.uk. Alternatively, you can call the Freephone 24h National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge, on 0808 2000 247 or visit www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk.
Q. Who can I contact if I am living with an abusive partner and I’m worried about myself and/or my children?
Refuge staff are working round the clock to make sure our services remain open and available for everyone that needs them. This includes our refuge accommodation up and down the country, our Freephone 24h National Domestic Abuse Helpline, and our digital resources. Visit www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk to source information and also to access a form to arrange for our expert staff to call you back at a safe time. Rest assured that you are not alone – it may take us slightly longer than usual to return your call, but will do everything we can to get back to you.
If you are self-isolating with a perpetrator you may be worried that he is monitoring your devices. Please remember that if you are unable to call our Helpline you can also seek support online, by filling in our webform.
Try to keep your phone charged and with you at all times and contact our services listed below if it is safe for you to do so:
For information and support:
- Call the Freephone 24h National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge, on 0808 2000 247. Our team of highly-trained female staff can offer you confidential and non-judgmental support, and information on your rights and options. Translators are available if English is not your native language.
- If it is not safe for you to call the Helpline, you can visit our website at www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk. You can use the contact form to register your details and tell us when is a safe time for one of the Helpline staff to call you back when your partner is not around.
- If you are concerned that your partner is monitoring your devices, including your phone or laptop, you can access our tech abuse chatbot (look for the pink speech bubble bottom right of the screen). Here, you can find simple step-by-step instructions in video form that you can use to safeguard your devices. Only access this service if it is safe for you to do so, and use our ‘quick exit’ button if you are in the vicinity of your abusive partner.
If you are in immediate danger:
Always call 999 in an emergency; if you are unable to speak on the phone, there are systems in place to connect you to the right service:
- If you are calling from a mobile phone, you can use the ‘Silent Solution’ system. Press 55 and the operator will transfer the call to the relevant police force as an emergency. The police call handler will then ask you a series of simple yes/no questions. If you’re still not able to speak, listen to the instructions you are given so the handler can assess your call and send help. Please note that calling from a mobile does not allow the police to track your location.
- If you are calling from a landline, pressing ‘55’ will not work. If you can’t speak you should stay on the line and the operator will connect you to a police call handler. If you need to put the phone down, the line will stay open for 45 seconds. If you pick it up again during this time and the operator is concerned for your safety, they will put you through to a police call handler. Calling 999 from a landline means the police may be able to retrieve information on your location to send help.
Q. What steps can I take to protect myself and my children in the home, and how can I prepare to flee if I need to?
Protecting yourself in the home:
If your partner becomes violent, try to avoid the kitchen, garage or anywhere that might have potential weapons.
Try to keep your mobile charged and on you at all times. Agree on a code word with trusted friends or family so that they can call the police if you text or call them. For instance, you could agree that a certain word or a blank text means you need the police urgently. If your neighbours are aware of the situation, let them know that they should call the police if they hear a disturbance.
If you have children, talk to them about where they can go to keep safe if the perpetrator becomes abusive. Emphasise that in this situation their priority is to get to safety first and then call for help. Tell them not to intervene as this could put them in further danger.
Preparing to leave:
If possible, keep your bank cards, a little cash and car keys (if you have them) in a safe and accessible place. If you are able, leave an overnight bag with friends or family. Include your Id, Driving license and passport in the bag, or copies if you have them.
Agree on a code word with your children as a way to instruct them safely to leave the home. It is a good idea to plan possible escape routes from each room that you can use both day and night. If you are unable to leave, lock yourself in a room and call the police. Use the Silent Solutions process if you need to by pressing 55 (see above for more detail).
Important messages for survivors:
Remember – you are not alone. Refuge is here for you and you can access help and support. Abuse is not your fault. It is a choice that a perpetrator makes; your partner is responsible for his violent and abusive behaviour. It is a choice he makes and he alone is responsible for changing this behaviour.
Domestic abuse is a crime and help is available. Do not suffer alone. Refuge is here for you. Pick up the phone, or if you are unable to do that, access us online. We stand with you today, tomorrow, and in the future. You are not alone.
Concerned friends and family members
Q. What should I do if I am concerned about a friend, family member, colleague or neighbour?
If you are concerned about someone you know, call the Freephone 24h National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge, on 0808 2000 247. Or visit www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk to use our contact form for a call back from one of the Helpline staff. They can offer you confidential support on how best to help the person you are worried about. If you are worried about their safety, call 999.
Do not approach the perpetrator, as this could escalate the abuse and put you and the victim at risk of harm.

When you are going through a difficult time, it can be very easy to keep your worries to yourself and believe that you are the only one experiencing such painful feelings. While we all have our own ways of coping, information and support can make a huge difference.
Counselling Directory was set up by a team who know how difficult it can be to find the support and information you need. Being a team who between us have experienced various mental health issues, we know how it feels to be overwhelmed, isolated and somewhat lost.
Through our own experiences, we have learnt how important having relevant information is and how the right support can help transform lives.
Our journey inspired us to share what we have learnt along the way with others. Our team is passionate about counselling and we want to promote the huge benefits talking therapy can have. We know how important it is to find the right counsellor for you and we are dedicated to making that process as simple as possible.

The Legacy of Leo Charity - LGBT+ Baby Loss
Charities and organisations are inclusive in recognising that same sex couples are also affected by baby loss, yet often there is only one or two examples of families that have been affected.
I would describe being a same sex couple experiencing baby loss as being in a small pond, within a small pond. Whilst neither pond is actually that small once you start swimming around in it – you have to search far and wide to find others likes yourself.
Visit the Legacy of Leo website for more information and blogs

COVID19 update, 3rd August 2020 - for full information please visit https://www.derbyshirelgbt.org.uk/2020/06/29/an-update-on-our-services/
The Golden Rainbows Research Project conducted by Derbyshire LGBT+ looked at the experiences of LGBT+ people over 50 years old in Derbyshire, particularly those in rural areas. The results of this project told us that there were many LGBT+ people over 50 who would benefit with a social support group for them, which would reduce isolation and loneliness.
We meet on the third Wednesday of the month from 1pm to 3pm. Our meetings may consist of an activity, we could have a guest speaker, a film, do a quiz or enjoy a games afternoon.
The group decides its own programme, and Derbyshire LGBT+ will facilitate a programme that is of interest to the entire group.
If you would like to know more about the group, would like to come to a meeting, or want to know the programme details for the next few meetings, please get in touch with Derbyshire LGBT+.
We also have a number of other Golden Rainbows groups around the county- check out their pages for more information.
