We make sure young people face up to their crime, take responsibility for their actions and we offer help and support if there are any personal issues like family background and friends that make re-offending more likely.
All referrals into the Youth Justice Service come exclusively through convictions up held in Her Majesty’s Court Service or through Nottinghamshire Police. All youth justice services are provided on a statutory basis.
We give every young person who has offended and been through the Court system one to one support. We look at ways to help the young person change their behaviour, and guide them towards new life opportunities like education and training, or learning new personal skills. All work is undertaken with the aim of reducing any further offending.

Coronavirus and miscarriage: your care
On this page, we share information on how the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is impacting access to hospital services for those who are pregnant or experiencing a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy, current information for those thinking about trying to conceive and for those awaiting investigations.
Last updated: 18 May 2020
We all know that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is having a major impact on many lives and especially on access to healthcare. NHS services need to focus on the most ill and most vulnerable people and we are all being asked to avoid using GP, community or hospital services as much as possible. This helps us to protect NHS patients, the staff caring for them, ourselves and each other.
Early pregnancy and maternity services are no different, so we hope the following information helps you to understand the impact this might have on anyone affected by pregnancy loss.
Access to hospital services for people who are currently pregnant or experiencing a miscarriage, ectopic or molar pregnancy
With increased pressure on the NHS due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, most early pregnancy units are having to limit the service they provide:
- to minimise the risk of exposure to the virus for people coming into a hospital environment
- to reduce the risk of spread within the hospital and
- because of reduced staff numbers caused by sickness, self-isolation and because of staff being moved to different departments, such as emergency care.
Wendy and Barry describe their experience of having a miscarriage during the coronavirus pandemic, with reduced access to hospital services.
However, anyone who needs emergency care for severe pain, very heavy vaginal bleeding, possible ectopic or molar pregnancy or other acute symptoms will still be seen and assessed in person, either by the specialist team or in the Accident and Emergency Department.
New information from the RCOG on early pregnancy care
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has published a guide to early pregnancy services during the coronavirus pandemic. While it focuses mainly on women and couples in the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, it is equally helpful for anyone who is not yet booked with a midwife or an antenatal clinic.
Ultrasound scans
There are very likely to be limits on ultrasound scans and most hospitals will allow only the woman being scanned to attend her appointment. Some will allow use of a mobile or smartphone for part of the appointment so that the partner or other supporter can take part remotely but that will depend on the individual hospital’s policy This can be very distressing, we know.
Miscarriage management
There will be fewer non-emergency surgical procedures under general anaesthetic, so women with a missed or incomplete miscarriage or a ‘blighted ovum’ or anembryonic pregnancy are more likely to be offered only natural (expectant) or medical management of miscarriage at home rather than being treated in hospital. We provide more detailed information about these options and what they mean for you on this page. And Amy shares her experience of medical management during lockdown here.
Ectopic pregnancy assessment and management
Ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening condition, so early assessment and treatment are crucial and access to care should remain as normal. See here for more information.
Molar pregnancy diagnosis and management
With fewer women having surgical management, it may take longer for some molar pregnancies to be diagnosed, so it’s very important to contact the hospital if a pregnancy tests is still positive 3 weeks after your loss. But once molar pregnancy has been diagnosed, care and follow-up will be as normal. You’ll find more information on our molar pregnancy pages, starting here.
If you are pregnant or currently experiencing a loss
If you need urgent advice regarding your pregnancy, you are encouraged to telephone your local Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit or Emergency Gynaecology Unit, or your midwife or antenatal clinic if you are already booked with them. It’s important to be as clear as possible about your symptoms or worries to help staff to assess your needs and advise on next steps. Please be assured that if you need emergency care for severe pain, very heavy vaginal bleeding, suspected ectopic pregnancy or other acute symptoms, then you will be assessed in person and seen accordingly.
If you are not pregnant, but planning on trying for a baby
The Association of Early Pregnancy Units suggests that you consider waiting until the pandemic is over before trying to conceive. This is to minimise the burden on the health service, to ensure you have full access to early pregnancy and maternity care and because it is too soon to fully understand the effect of the virus in pregnancy. But everyone’s circumstances differ and this will always be your decision.
If you are waiting investigations following recurrent or second trimester miscarriage
Investigations into the possible causes of recurrent miscarriage or late loss are currently suspended in most hospitals, but there are plans to reintroduce them gradually over the next few weeks. As with other services, this will depend on the availability of specialist staff, some of whom have been diverted to other areas of care during the pandemic.
Information, guidance and support
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has general up to date information and guidance on pregnancy and Coronavirus at www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/guidelines/coronavirus-pregnancy/covid-19-virus-infection-and-pregnancy/.

About Sands
Sands is the leading stillbirth and neonatal death charity in the UK. Sands exists to reduce the number of babies dying and to ensure that anyone affected by the death of a baby receives the best possible care and support for as long as they need it.
Sands provides bereavement support services both nationally through its Freephone helpline, mobile app, online community and resources, and locally through a UK-wide network of around 100 regional support groups.
Sands works in partnership with health care professionals, trusts and health boards and offers a range of training programmes and bereavement care resources to ensure that every bereaved parent and family receives the best possible care wherever they are in the UK.
Sands promotes and funds research to better understand the causes of baby deaths and save babies’ lives. The charity also raises awareness of baby loss and works with governments, key influencers and other stakeholders to make reducing the number of babies dying a priority nationally and locally.
Over the past 40 years, Sands has grown into a national charity with a powerful vision, to create a world where fewer babies die, shared by dedicated volunteers, fundraisers, members, donors, healthcare professionals, partners, staff and bereaved parents and families.

CAMHS stands for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. It’s the part of the NHS which helps children and young people who have problems with their thoughts or feelings. We can help people until they are 18. If someone like a teacher or your doctor is worried about you, they can write to CAMHS to see if we can help you. This is called making a referral. The person who is going to write to us has to get your permission first. As long as we think you are able to decide, it's up to you whether or not we let your parents know.
If you are having trouble with your thoughts or feelings talk to your parents or carers, or an adult you trust. There is a useful website called Health for Teens that you may find useful: http://www.healthforteens.co.uk/
Most children who get help from CAMHS see one of our community teams. This normally means you will come to see us for weekly appointments at one of our bases, at a health centre or at your school. We have lots of people working for us who can help you in different ways. These include:
-
family therapists – who talk through problems with you and your family
-
CAMHS social workers – who support children and families through difficult times
-
family support workers – who can give advice to your parents or carers
-
mental health practitioners – who support young people and their families to bring about positive change
-
psychologists – experts in how people think and act
-
psychiatrists – doctors who work on thoughts and feelings
-
art psychotherapists – who can help you by using art and music
For more information visit our website: http://bit.ly/2sQl6GD
Information for parents and carers can be found at: http://bit.ly/2sgBCkS
As well as our community teams, we have some teams which work on other difficulties. These include:
- Problems with eating
- Problems with drugs or alcohol
- Psychosis – when someone hears or sees things which aren’t there
- Intellectual disability – when someone finds it difficult to communicate or understand things

The National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) is a rights based charity which operates across England and Wales for children, young people and adults.
The National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS) is a unique, 'not for profit', children's charity which supplies a range of independent services to children and young people, their families and appropriately involved adults.
NYAS advocacy services provide children and young people with information about their rights and entitlements and assistance to enable them to use formal complaints procedures if that is what they want, and to have a voice and be heard when decisions are made about their lives.
NYAS also provides Independent Visitor services for children who have had little or no contact with their family in the last twelve months. NYAS's Independent Visitor Service offers long-term, consistent and stable adult relationships for children and young people, who may not experience positive adult friendships. This can consist of simply going for coffee, walks, trips to the cinema, supporting the young person to keep in touch with their religion or culture, help at reviews, help with school work, sport, to sit with, or just listen and talk.

The original founders of the group wanted to create a safe space to talk about their self harm, and offer and receive support from each other that was non-judgemental and accepting.
The groups have run with these core principles ever since, and are one of the few self injury self help groups in the country.
The Support Groups and Wellbeing Workshops are open to anyone, so you can just turn up if you want to. The Making Changes group will run over 6 sessions and you can self refer to sign up for this course if you think you would find it helpful.

Especially in a pandemic we believe everyone has the right to a better future.
Brighter Futures provides housing-related support for people in Nottinghamshire, who have a range of support needs and are at risk of losing their homes.
The service can support people who;
• have been assessed by Adult Health & Social Care but are ineligible for statutory services
• have a history that shows they might put their accommodation at risk without intervention and support
• have a need that is likely to require longer term but low level housing- related support.
We work with people who have a wide range of support needs, such as Autism, learning disabilities, Asperger’s or following a brain injury, or where they don’t meet the criteria for statutory adult social care, among others.
The service will be really flexible and service users will be able to have a say in how they are supported and what their needs are. We can help with finding accommodation, accessing specialist services, budgeting and claiming benefits among many other things.
We can offer support in a range of ways, which could include in own homes and in the community, to help maintain independence. The support is linked to the service user and not their tenancy, so if they move within Nottinghamshire we can continue to support them.
Based on the application, assessment and feedback that we receive from an agency, a member of the team will decide whether this service will be beneficial or not. If so they will be in contact within ten days of the referral.

Information and Support
Monday to Friday: 9am - 5pm
Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is the world’s leading charity working to eradicate group B Strep infection in babies. We educate the public, doctors and midwives about group B Strep and provide information and support to affected families.
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months.
National Helpline
We provide confidential support and information to families and professionals in a number of ways including digital, telephone and email services.
Our Helpline provides general information for guidance on group B Strep and is accessed more than 1200 times a month. This ranges from straightforward enquiries seeking information on where to get GBS testing to much lengthier conversations, with parents needing to understand much more in-depth the issues around GBS.
The average call time with a parent who has had a baby affected by GBS is approximately 30 minutes.
We support families suffering from the devastating consequences of GBS infection as well as expectant parents concerned that their baby is at risk of GBS infection.
- Many families contact us when a baby close to them falls ill. GBSS responds with information, a listening ear, and one-to-one support by phone or email.
- GBSS gives families a safe space to share their experiences with others.
- Parents and relatives may feel lonely and isolated by their experience – GBSS provides a feeling of belonging to a supportive community who understand what they are going through.

Coronavirus: how we are supporting participants during the pandemic
Since March 2020 the Coronavirus pandemic has given rise to an unprecedented situation, affecting the lives of us all and resulting in the closure of key services and support agencies. During this time the health, safety and wellbeing of Opportunity and Change participants remains our priority, and the partnership has been working tirelessly to ensure that participants remain supported.
We are continuing to accept new referrals; offering a remote induction to the project and telephone/online support until we are in a position to fully assess participant eligibility and resume face-to-face contact.
The project is responding to the crisis in the following ways:
All face-to-face appointments have been replaced with telephone and online support (e.g. Zoom, WhatsApp, email, etc.)
Frequency of contact has increased; Navigators are checking-in more often to help reduce feelings of isolation
Up to date resources are being shared, including: mental health tools, online training courses and financial support
Participants accessing counselling services have been able to continue to do so via phone or using a virtual meeting platform
Participants who are missing their weekly Skills Plus for Change sessions are being offered alternative support online
Navigator support has adapted to meet the practical needs of participants; ensuring they have access to food parcels, toiletries, utilities and delivering prescriptions where necessary
What is Opportunity and Change?
Opportunity and Change is a support programme for people with multiple and complex needs throughout Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Our programme is being delivered by local organisations working together, with a range of experience of working with people with multiple and complex needs.
We aim to support people achieve stability and provide access to mainstream services. We work with individuals to create a tailored package of support that will assist with a range of needs including accommodation, mental healthcare and education.
We are part of the national Building Better Opportunities programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Union through its European Social Fund. It is being managed by Framework, a charity and housing association dedicated to helping homeless people, preventing homelessness, and promoting opportunities for vulnerable and excluded people.
